For nearly 20 years, 'Under the Mangosteen Tree' has had an extraordinary number of people pass through its world.

Actors who stayed for years. Actors who joined for a few shows. Musicians, designers, technicians, stage managers, production teams, photographers, friends, supporters, and all the people who have quietly helped this play become what it is.

The play may have Basheer’s words at its heart, but its magic has always belonged to the people who have carried those words from one stage to another.

Thank you for showing up. For believing in it. For giving it your time.

This has always been a collective act of love.

And what a beautiful, unforgettable thing we have made together. ❤️

I have known Vaikom Muhammad Basheer through his words, and as someone from his hometown, Thalayolaparambu, it felt even more special to finally see him come alive before me.

I have loved the people who live inside his stories.
I have laughed with them, cried with them, and somewhere along the way, found little pieces of myself in them.

But today, for the first time, I saw Vaikom Muhammed Basheer :)

As his words came alive on stage, it felt as though the people and characters I had known only through the pages of his books had suddenly stepped right in front of me.

It felt like sitting beneath a mangosteen tree, listening to Basheer tell his stories!

The beautiful souls from Basheer’s world came alive before me once again.

There were moments when I laughed wholeheartedly.
There were moments when my eyes quietly filled with tears.
And there were characters who left the stage, but never really left my mind.

Some of their words stayed with me..somewhere deep inside.

The play ended.
The stage lights went off.
People slowly walked away.

But Basheer stayed.

He stayed behind in the form of his people—their love, their pain, their laughter, and their beautifully imperfect lives.

Aparna Gopinath has been with 'Under the Mangosteen Tree' since its very first performance.

Over these years, she has inhabited Basheer’s strong women and, in a rare turn, his dynamic men too. "To see the world through both has been a privilege: to discover, again and again, just how far ahead of his time Basheer was."

And now, as young Basheer, Aparna gets to step into the writer’s shoes.

Perhaps there is something fitting about that - a journey that began by playing his characters, ending by becoming the man who created them.

One last time. One last journey with Basheer.

KARNATAKA, WE ARE COMING BACK. ONE LAST TIME.

Since Under the Mangosteen Tree first travelled across Karnataka, the play has found a home in its theatres, and among its audiences.

Over the years, we have returned to warm welcomes, generous audiences, heartfelt conversations—and the special sense of connection that comes when a story continues to live beyond the stage.

As we begin the Karnataka chapter of our Farewell Tour, it feels especially meaningful to return to places that have been part of this journey.
