Latin American Photographer to Know #19

Cristóbal Olivares.  Chile

Cristóbal Olivares is a Chilean photographer whose work explores the social, political, and environmental realities shaping contemporary Latin America. Through long-term documentary projects, he examines the lives of communities affected by migration, inequality, climate change, and political transformation, always with a strong sense of empathy and human connection.

Based in Santiago, Olivares is also the co-founder of the independent photobook publisher Buen Lugar @buenlugar which has become an important platform for contemporary photography in Chile.

His practice has received international recognition, including being named a National Geographic Explorer, a Magnum Foundation Photography and Social Justice Fellow, and receiving awards from World Press Photo, where his multimedia project The Eternity of Tomorrow was recognised in 2021.

What an incredible few days at STGO Foto.

I’m leaving Santiago feeling deeply inspired by the generosity, conversations and connections that made this experience so special. It was a privilege to meet so many photographers, artists, publishers and photobook lovers, and to begin building new relationships between Latin America and Australia through Aperture Sur.

I can’t wait to bring this incredible collection of photobooks back to Australia and share these remarkable voices through future presentations, exchanges and collaborations.

A huge thank you to @stgofotoferia for your warm hospitality and for creating such a wonderful space to connect, learn and share. This is just the beginning.

Today marks the first day of STGO Foto!

We’re excited to be here representing Aperture Sur and beginning our first photobook exchange between Australia and Latin America. Over the next few days we’ll be sharing a selection of Australian photobooks, meeting photographers, artists and publishers, and discovering incredible photobooks from across Chile and the region to take back to Australia.

Del 30 de julio al 2 de agosto, Aperture Sur estará en STGO Foto buscando fotolibros de Chile y de toda América Latina para llevarlos a Australia.

Los títulos seleccionados formarán parte de una muestra y presentación en la sede de The Photobook Archive, dando a conocer las prácticas editoriales y fotográficas de la región a nuevas audiencias australianas y fortaleciendo el intercambio cultural entre ambos territorios.

Nuestro objetivo es crear conexiones duraderas entre las comunidades fotográficas de América Latina y Australia, impulsando el diálogo, la colaboración y el intercambio de fotolibros.

Si eres fotógrafo/a, artista o editorial independiente y te gustaría que tu fotolibro forme parte de esta iniciativa, escríbenos por DM.

From 30 July – 2 August, Aperture Sur will be at STGO Foto looking for photobooks from Chile and across Latin America to bring back to Australia.

Selected titles will be featured in a showcase and presentation at the Photobook Archive, introducing Latin American photobook practices to Australian audiences and fostering new opportunities for cultural exchange.

Our goal is to build lasting connections between the photographic communities of Latin America and Australia through dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of photobooks.

Cada sesión de LECTURAS VISUALES nos deja la misma sensación: mirar en comunidad transforma la experiencia de mirar.
Lo que comienza siendo un libro termina convirtiéndose en una conversación donde las imágenes, los silencios, las dudas y las distintas interpretaciones construyen nuevas capas de sentido.
Gracias a quienes fueron parte de este encuentro y ayudaron a hacer de esta sesión un espacio generoso, atento y profundamente estimulante.

Aperture Sur has officially landed in Santiago, Chile for our very first photobook exchange project with @stgofotoferia .
We’ve arrived with a carefully selected collection of Australian photobooks to share at the fair, and we’re looking forward to bringing home an incredible selection of photobooks from Chile and across Latin America to introduce to audiences in Australia.

It was such a pleasure to spend an evening looking through the books with @catalinadelacruz.cdlc and @erwinvelasco . Excited to share this rich array of stories, perspectives, and photographic practices from across the Pacific, and to begin building new connections between our photographic communities.

Latin American Photographer to Know #18

Irina Werning Argentina

Irina Werning is a freelance photographer who focuses on personal long term projects.

Her ongoing series Las Pelilargas (The Long-haired ones) began almost by accident while documenting rural schools in the Andes. Drawn to the extraordinary lengths of the girls’ hair, Werning embarked on what would become an eighteen-year project across Latin America, photographing women with long hair and tracing the stories and meanings attached to it.

Latin American Photographer to Know #17

Carolina Agüero Chile

Carolina Agüero’s work reflects on identity, gender, human rights, and the ways we relate to one another in both public and intimate spaces. She addresses themes such as violence against women, trans experiences, and social marginalisation.

A distinctive element of Agüero’s practice is her use of embroidery on photographs. The stitching, often red, simultaneously speaks of mending and rupture, adding a visceral layer that recalls bodily wounds and the lasting effects of violence.

More recently, Agüero has turned towards ancestral memories. Through photographs, video, and textile interventions, she reflects on intergenerational connections and the ways personal histories are carried across time. Her work becomes a space where past and present meet, honouring the women and ancestors whose lives continue to shape her own.
