Injuries happen and sport preferences evolve over time.

Developing the ability adapt to internal and external constraints is a crucial tool for rehab, training, and life as a whole.

Here are a few strategies:

1. Separate identity from the outlet - develop range in your interests and how you express physicality or passion.

2. Define success by continuity over outcome

3. Zoom out - Ask yourself, “does this fit me in my life, right now?”

There are times in life when you can “drop the hammer” and others where family, sickness, or professional development will take precedent. Mental flexibility helps maintain forward momentum in the face of changing realities as experience across our many seasons of life.

Happy training y’all!

MOUNTAIN ATHLETES: I’m a big fan of the warm ups, but excessive mobility / “stability” drills that detract from the real work likely aren’t moving the needle on your goals or your capacity.

Get warm and do what you need to feel ready but if that is taking >10 minutes I’d suggest a program audit to ensure your current level of preparedness is supporting your training intensity.

Programming Series: Stop Changing your accessories every week.

Consistent stimulus is a cornerstone of good strength and conditioning program. Giving your physiology the “signal” to change requires repetition across sessions and across weeks. When you constantly switch accessory lifts, you disrupt the neuromuscular adaptations that are essential for long-term athletic development - think intra-muscular and inter-muscular coordination. Learning how your body “feels” under certain patterns, loads, and velocities is an under-appreciated component of athletic development and shouldn’t be rushed. I typically vary the accessories in my programs every 4-6 weeks. This same concept applies well to endurance physiology as well, but I’ll save that for another time.

Bottom Line: Adaptation requires constant signaling + time. Stick with your accessories.

Showing the second day of resistance programming on the current personal training cycle. Complementing the drop jumps with deeper knee angle impulse generation with the trap bar jumps and slower contraction times on the heavy trapbar deads. Upper body reflects those planes / patterns not touched in day one.

Training balance isn’t just about “push / pull” or “sagittal / frontal”. How are you finding balance in your contraction types, speeds, and impulse strategies?

Happy Training y’all! 🏴

Programming Series : Intensity

One critical aspect of this topic is “earning the right” to intensity. This could be seen as gate keeping but really it’s about optimal long term athletic development and training efficacy. Athletes with younger biological and training ages simply don’t need the same intensity to see improvements in force production. While everyone should have the goal to eventually move heavy loads, start with an emphasis on movement competence and build.

That brings me to another point - While I certainly consider myself a movement optimist, form matters for training. Changing the levers of a system will change where the load is placed and if we have specific adaptions in minds (i.e. Achilles tendon stiffness or quadriceps rate of torque development) how you do your calf raises and squats matters, a lot.

Happy training, rehabbing, and coaching y’all!

Little snippet of the current resistance training vibes. Currently running maintenance volume with 24 ish miles per week and biking a good amount so lifts have been quick with full body tier based structure. I don’t think I’ll move away from full body lifts ever again in my own programming. It’s amazing what you can accomplish on less than 45 minutes in the gym.

Happy training y’all.

We are pleased to announce that as of June 9th, Dr. Andrew Brown will be joining Apex as a physical therapy provider. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience, and skillsets that will both complement and broaden our offerings.
.
Andrew’s combined experiences in sport performance and rehabilitation have led him to adopt a performance minded approach to physical therapy that takes each individual’s personal factors into account when developing a rehabilitation program. He strongly believes in training safely around injuries and finding ways for his patients to stay as active as possible throughout the rehab process.
.
Andrew’s passion for movement led him to pursue his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. Following completion of his undergraduate degree, Andrew obtained his Master’s of Science in Kinesiology at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, where he studied the effects of breath training on high intensity cycling performance. His passion for education and helping people return from injury further led him to pursue a Doctorate in Physical Therapy which he received from the University of Puget Sound. He has worked in a variety of rehabilitation and coaching contexts including sports – orthopedic, private, group, high school, and collegiate, and special operations tactical populations.
.
Aside from his own training, staying up to date on research, coaching others, and working his dream job as a Physical Therapist, Andrew enjoys spending his time trail running, skiing, fly fishing, and sampling craft beers with his wife, Amber, and their dogs and training partners, Cedar and Baker. by @northcoaststrength
