I was going to write something like “30 things I wish I knew before I turned 30” or something similar, but if you’ve known me long enough, you’ll know I don’t really do that. To me, it’s just another working day, making sure my clients get their check-ins done and are pushed to their limits and beyond.

Today marks my 30th birthday, and the biggest thing I’ve learned over the last few years is to surround yourself with people who genuinely want the best for you. People who want to see you succeed, but who are also willing to help you get there. The right people won’t just celebrate your wins; they’ll help you through the moments when you feel like you’ve got nothing left to give.

There are so many people I’d love to thank here, but I’d rather do that in person. You know who you are. Thank you for believing in me, for standing by me, and for being part of this journey. I honestly wouldn’t be where I am today without you.

I’m still here.

Life has thrown plenty of challenges my way over the past couple of years. There were moments that tested me more than I ever expected, but I’m still standing. Not because I did it all on my own, but because of the people who stood beside me when I needed them most.

Thirty feels less about reaching a milestone and more about appreciating the people who helped me get here. Here’s to whatever comes next.

THE PROS 💪

If you’re a beginner, having someone with you can give you that extra bit of confidence. Walking into the gym and trying new exercises can feel intimidating, so having a friend beside you can make it much less daunting.

You can motivate each other, celebrate the wins and keep each other accountable.

And if you’re more experienced, training with a friend can be great for pushing each other to get those extra reps and challenge yourselves.

BUT… THE CONS 👀

If you’re both beginners, there’s a chance neither of you actually knows whether you’re doing an exercise correctly.

That can mean picking up bad habits with your form that might seem harmless now but become much harder to correct later.

And then there’s the biggest danger of all…

The 90-second rest that somehow turns into a 5-minute catch-up. 😂

“Right, one more set.”

15 minutes later…

You’ve discussed work, relationships, what you’re having for dinner and somehow planned your weekend.

So, is training with your friend killing your progress?

Not necessarily.

Having the right person beside you can make the gym more enjoyable, give you confidence and keep you consistent.

Just make sure you’re still learning proper technique, actually taking your rest times seriously and not accidentally turning leg day into a social event. 😂

Train together. Learn together. Just don’t let the catch-up become the workout. 🏋️‍♀️ by @apisperformance

✨ CLIENT SPOTLIGHT ✨

We recently celebrated 2 years of working together, and what a journey it’s been. 🥹💪

When Irina first came to me, her main goal was to improve her lower-back strength, learn how to train safely and confidently, and maintain her body weight along the way.

The first video shows her very first rack pull.

Her confidence was low. Her fear of making her lower back worse was high.

All it took was trust, reassurance, the right technique and a structured plan.

Fast forward 2 years… and her rack pull PB is now 142.5kg. 🤯🔥

From being scared of the movement to confidently lifting 142.5kg. This is what consistent, intelligent strength training can do.

“Being and staying fit has always played a great part in my life for many years until I injured my back. My life suddenly stopped, it was mentally difficult to accept that, and I was confused. I knew something had to change: the way I train and the type of training I do.

Words can’t describe how happy I am that I started training with Matt 2 years ago. I saw him on the gym floor with other clients, liked his training style and jokes, and made up my mind: he had to be my PT, and I’d never look back. Matt addressed my back problems with corrective exercises that I rigorously do nearly every day. He introduced me to proper strength training, which was previously a taboo for me. I fell in love with it and enjoy the results”

And ladies, let this be your reminder:

Lifting heavy weights will NOT automatically make you bulky.

Women can lift heavy, get stronger, build muscle, improve their body composition and feel more confident in their bodies without suddenly becoming “too muscular”.

Strength training is about becoming stronger, healthier and more capable; and you don’t need to be afraid of getting stronger.

If you’re a woman who wants to learn how to lift weights safely, build strength, improve your technique or simply feel more confident in the gym, send me a message 💬

You don’t need to figure it all out on your own. Let’s build your strength together.🫶🏽💪🏽 by @apisperformance

Think of water as fuel for your body. You need it whether you’re training in the gym, following a diet, or getting ready for a race.

🏋️ Training
When you exercise, you sweat and lose water. If you don’t replace it, you can feel tired, get headaches, struggle to concentrate, and your performance can drop. Staying hydrated helps your muscles work properly and helps you train harder for longer.

🥗 Diet
Water can help you feel fuller and can stop you confusing thirst with hunger. It also helps your body digest food and transport nutrients around your body. If you’re trying to lose weight, water is a much better everyday choice than sugary drinks, which can add lots of calories.

🏃 Racing
On race day, hydration becomes even more important. You can lose a lot of fluid through sweat, especially during longer or harder events. Starting well hydrated and replacing fluids during the race can help you maintain your performance and reduce the risk of dehydration.

The simple rule:
Don’t wait until you’re really thirsty. Drink regularly throughout the day, drink around your training, and pay extra attention to hydration during longer or hotter sessions.

This one deserves a spotlight.

Since October last year, Katie has been working her way through a hamstring and patellar tendinopathy injury. It hasn’t always been straightforward, and there have been plenty of ups, downs and moments where patience has been tested.

But Katie has continued to show up, put the work in and trust the process.

And now? Her fastest 10K to date. 👏🏼

This is what makes this achievement so special. It’s not just the number on the clock — it’s everything Katie has done behind the scenes to get herself back to this level.

Her consistency. Her patience. Her commitment. Her willingness to do the work even when progress felt slow.

And this is just one of many 10Ks to come. 💪🏼

Katie’s journey is also a great reminder that injuries and niggles don’t have to be the end of the road. With the right programme, the right progression and a little patience, there is often a way forward.

Huge well done, Katie. You’ve earned this one. ❤️
