Watch this before making your animated series!!

Recently I’ve been seeing a lot of animators excited to jump into creating their own indie animated series.

There are a lot of successful indie animated series like The Pretty Good Analog Carnival, and Washed Up Motel.

Before you make your animated series, consider this.

Not all animated series are successful, in fact most of them are not profitable.

Take it from a guy who’s been making animated series for over 12 years, making original cartoons is pretty hard. Making money through your original cartoons, it’s nearly impossible.

You only hear about the popular series because of survivorship bias.

A common example of survivorship bias is billionaire tech CEOs. Everyone’s heard the story of Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs dropping out of college. Then they started their own companies and became super rich. So a lot of people think they can start their own businesses and make a big sack a cash. The thing is, we mostly just hear about the success stories. There are probably thousands of people who tried to run tech companies and failed, we just don’t know about them because they failed.

Making animated series is the exact same way. You might create something that’s really high quality, and everyone who sees it says “It’s so peak” but it could still get very few views and a very small amount of revenue earned. And keep in mind, creating animated content comes at a great financial cost.

Even if you don’t hire people, and you animate the entire thing yourself, it can take hundreds of hours. If you work on an animation for 100 hours instead of working a job, and you could have been making 15 bucks an hour, you have essentially spent 1,500 dollars in time on your pilot.

In economics they call this opportunity cost. Whenever you do something it comes at a cost because you could’ve been doing something else.

Now don’t get me wrong, there’s more to life than just money. Making an animat by @apokeanimation

“I have to use AI because I don’t know how to draw” is a thought I hear a lot nowadays.

Well I just wanted to calmly say YES YOU CAN! YOU CAN DRAW!! Shut the f up with this “I can’t draw” nonsense. YOU CAN DRAW! Everybody can draw, even little kids and disabled people can draw. The thing is, you just cannot draw well. You cannot draw at a professional level. Well guess what, the only reason you’d need to draw at a professional level, is if you’re trying to make money through your art, or you are trying to impress people. When you draw badly, and it doesn’t look how you imagined it, you feel ashamed of yourself. You want the immediate gratification of feeling like a master, without putting in the work it takes to actually improve.

It’s like singing, everyone who can talk can sing. There’s professional singers, then there’s me at karaoke. Everyone sucks at everything when they start out. How do you expect to get better, if you don’t practice? People don’t wanna be bad at things, because it’s embarrassing. In movies they make it look so easy, the main character just does like a 2 minute training arc and then they get jacked. You have to get comfortable with the fact that in real life, it takes actual hard work to get good at something.

Lemme show you something. This is Hero Blast! It was the first animated series I ever created, and I made it when I was 14 years old. The animation is clearly not very good. It looks like it was drawn by a child, because it was. But it was mine. It was created by my hand. It’s a direct manifestation of my artistic abilities and vision. I wasn’t concerned with the animation looking professional. I made it because I had a story to tell. If you have a story to tell, you can do it without some dumb machine that produces a bastardization of your creativity.

TIPS for animators!

Are you tired of opening your model sheet and getting one of your monitors hogged every time you wanna draw your character?

Try printing out your model sheet and taping it to the wall behind your computer! Then whenever you need to see your character reference, you just look up and BAM it’s right there.

Tips for Babies!

When you invest, you’re definitely gonna wanna invest over a longer time horizon in order to get the largest gains over time. The stock market fluctuates rapidly, and there are times of economic fall, but keep your money in the stock market, historically it’s increased the most over long periods of time. Definitely diversify your investments. You can invest in the S&P 500, which is a collection of the top 500 largest publicly traded companies in the United States. Many professional fund managers can’t even out perform the S & P 500. You can also invest in a Tax Free savings account, which is a registered savings account that works like an investment account. It can hold cash savings and investments that generate tax free income. Right now you’re a baby so I definitely suggest you begin investing right away so you can build a stable financial future.

Also when your mom plays peekaboo with you, she’s not actually disappearing, her hands are just covering her face.

Thanks for watching, leave a like if ya learned something new and send it to a friend who always shows up late.

What's it like working in an animation studio?

What's it like working in an animation studio? I worked at 3 of ‘em and I worked on some shows like Sonic Prime and Lego Ninjago, so I’ve probably got enough qualifications to answer that.

Working at animation studios, they almost always hire you contract to contract. So you join for a set start and end date. Afterwards they might renew your contract, if they don’t you have to hunt down your next job. The career stability is pretty rocky.cwqcwcqcwqccwcq

On your first week, they usually give you 1 - 5 days of training, so you can get comfortable with the rigs, read the show bible, and animate a practice shot.

There was one show I joined, and the first 2 weeks were training which was really awesome.

Some studios, day one they’re like welcome aboard, here are your shots, get to animating.

In studios each phase is done by a separate department, so the 3D modeling is done by the modeling department, rigging team builds the rigs, then animation team does animation, lighting team does, you guessed it lighting.

I often get asked, how do you animate the shows? Does each animator make one episode? Or do you all animate their own version of one episode, and then they pick the best version? Does every animator animate one character?

That’s not quite how things work. So one animator doesn’t animate one episode because it would take too long. Each animator does not animate their own version of the episode, and then the director picks their favourite because it’d be horribly inefficient. You’d be producing hours of content that just gets thrown in the trash. Each animator does not animate one character for the entire episode. Characters often interact with each other, so like, how would that even work? Being an animator means you’re an actor who plays every character. It’s different from being a live action actor where actors typically just play 1 role. In live action, the actor can add subtle character specific quirks, like how Steve Harrington always spins his bat in Stranger Th by @apokeanimation

Ace Attorney

So a few days ago I made a video responding to the accusations that Disney was using Gen AI to create the animation for their latest movie Hexed.

Some people thought it was AI because a character’s earing disappears between shots

As a professional 3D animator, I can generally tell when something’s been keyframe animated. Also my eyes get assaulted by AI sewage every time I open linkedin so I’m accustomed to seeing the AI style, I concluded this is clearly not AI, the earring could have been hidden by mistake.

I got a lot of conflicting comments saying “It’s just covered by her braid!” and others saying “you can see the earring! It’s right there, it’s just hidden in the shadows!” I didn’t mention this in my initial video, so I’m making this follow video to further investigate and get to the bottom of this.

I frame by framed through the shot, zoomed in on the ear, and increased the brightness and saturation.

Okay, now that I’ve looked at it more closely, yeah I think you guys are right. The braid is covering it. What do you guys think, lemme know in the comments!

Either way, my last video got a comment from Hector Abraham who says
“Disney artist here. We are not using gen AI on any project and there hasn’t been any layoffs this year…”

Michael Franceschi commented saying “It’s not AI. I’m Head of Animation on Hexed. We’re not using Gen AI.”

So we can definitively say, straight up Hexed is not AI generated.

Subscribe if you wanna learn more about animation, so you can be better at debating people online about cartoons. Send this video to a friend who needs to fix their sleep schedule. by @apokeanimation

Did Disney use Gen AI for their latest movie?!

There’s this tweet going super viral accusing Disney of using gen AI in the trailer for their latest movie called Hexed. The post says

How come Walt Disney Animations, a $2.3 billion dollar company is laying off animators and make ai slop garbage to save money?
It’s not even hard to tell. These frames are milliseconds apart yet she has an earring in one and not the other.

I’m seeing a lot of people debating this, and I am a professional 3D animator, I worked on some shows like Sonic Prime and Lego Ninjago so I have quite a bit of experience in 3D animation. So I have a lot to say on this topic.

I decided to take a look at the trailer to find the moment they’re talking about and inspect it myself.

So as we can see, these come from two different shots. Saying these 2 frames are miliseconds apart is pretty misleading, because it implies they’re from the same shot. This could clearly have been animated by 2 different animators.

I saw a lot of people in the comments saying it’s 3D, so it’s impossible for the character to go off model.

Yes it’s true it’s easier to accidentally go off model in a 2D animation because you redraw the character and can forget to draw details or draw them incorrectly. It’s still possible for there to be continuity errors in 3D films. Like maybe the computer was running slowly, and the animator hid the earring to save on computer processing power, then they submitted the shot without unhiding the earring and the directors didn’t notice.

Another thing that can happen in films is sometimes the directors can change their mind about how a character should look. The character could have originally had no earring, then the director changed their mind and said “Add earrings to the girl in every shot!” and the animators added an earring prop and constrained it to her ear, but maybe they forgot to add it in this shot.

Final piece of evidence for this trailer not being AI, is that it clearly doesn’t look like AI at all. AI animations are very glossy, and add this really shiny blurriness to it. This trailer clearly doesn’t have that, and the movements and acting decisions are way too intentional by @apokeanimation

Can You Run An Animation Studio in Your Bedroom?

Can You Run An Animation Studio in Your Bedroom?

The answer is YES! BECAUSE I DID IT

In this corner I’ve got my awesome PC, that runs all my programs, my 24 inch drawing tablet, I used to use a really small 12 inch tablet, but it was way too hard to draw with. Using the bigger tablet my drawings look a lot better and I can draw a lot faster.

My right monitor I use for the node view, if you don’t know what the node view is, it’s basically a labyrinth of spaghetti code you create to torture yourself, and the left monitor is for distractions.

I have a small whiteboard to write down notes, and I have a big whiteboard to make the small whiteboard jealous.

From my throne, I animate, storyboard, direct, and basically do everything else I need to do right in this room. I’ve made a bunch of cool stuff like my sci-fi animated series Manware, and a minecraft anime series!

If you wanna make stuff in your bedroom! Go do it!! You don’t need a hundred million dollars or famous celebrities to tell a good story. You can make a film in a cave, with a box of scraps.

Like this video if you found it helpful, and send it to your friend who says they’re gonna make a big project but hasn’t started even tho they keep saying they’re gonna do it.

Have you heard of the new indie animated series based on Minecraft?

Steve vs Alex | A Minecraft Anime was the pilot episode, and it’s a comedy action story about Steve and Alex, who are really close friends, they love building and having fun together, but they realise they have different morals, have a big argument, and it leads to their friendship falling apart and they have a huge battle.

This series is especially awesome because I made it!! And guess what, the second episode is almost here sucka!

The next one’s called Steve vs Griefers is about Steve on his own, and it’s really focused on the feeling of playing Minecraft alone. When you play minecraft singleplayer, it really creates this somber quiet feeling I wanted to capture with this episode. It’s a big part of the minecraft experience I feel like nobody ever talks about.

For the fight scenes in the series, I wanted to use a lot of Minecraft mechanics as a part of the fights. Like for example Steve uses ender pearls to teleport around Alex, bashing her from all sides, and then Alex places lava on the ground to burn him. Steve uses a water bucket to put himself out, and the lava turns to obsidian, and Alex jumps on top of the obsidian and uses it as a platform.

A big part of choreographing these fight scenes is I wanted to invoke the feeling of fighting in minecraft, without it literally looking like a minecraft fight. The fights in minecraft have very basic animations, and a very minimalistic style. But they still feel super tense when you play the game your imagination takes over. With my animations I wanted to visually show what you imagine is happening when you fight in Minecraft.

We’re just finishing up the animation and sound design now. Aiming to get this episode out in early June. If you wanna get your name, or a hand drawn illustration of your minecraft skin in the credits, consider supporting on Patreon! It’s gonna come out soon so now’s basically you’re only chance, once the episode’s out, that’s it. by @apokeanimation

RELATABLE JOKES FOR ANIMATORS

Don’t cha just hate it when you’re animating, and your animation software crashes?!

Don’t cha just hate it when you’re animating, and you accidentally drew on the wrong layer?!

Don’t cha just hate it when you apply to over 270 jobs, and can’t get a single offer. Everyone thinks you’re not trying, like you just don’t want a job or something, yeah like as if you just desire poverty. People were nice to you when you had a job. Now all of the sudden people treat you like trash. You’re still the same person, you’re just in a different situation. Nobody sees you customize your resume for every single application. Nobody sees you creating accounts on sites just so you can apply to the job. Nobody sees all the time you spend filling out mandatory questionnaires, which are redundant because all the information is right there on your resume. A lot of companies nowadays scan your resume with some AI software, and if the AI doesn’t like your application, it just throws it in the trash without even showing it to a recruiter. You try talking to a career counsellor and they just copy your questions into chatgpt and copy/paste the AI answers back to you. They don’t even take the time to talk to you like a normal human being. So you try escaping this vicious time black hole by creating your own self produced content. You create multiple animated series, where does it get you? You just lose money on every single project and just keep slipping deeper and deeper into this tar pit.

Don’t cha just hate it when the paint bucket tool doesn’t fill?!

The Guy Invincible Compositing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv0OIxvvFcs

Has your dog ever asked you “What is compositing?” If you didn’t know what to say, it’s the stage in filmmaking when you take your backgrounds, characters, and everything else, and make ‘em look like one cohesive work of art.

But it’s not just combining the different elements together, you also add things like shadows and highlights on characters, reflections, blurs, shadows on the environment, colour correction, and glow onto things like fire or lights.

Here’s a shot without compositing, and here’s the shot with compositing. Big difference right?

Some animators might avoid compositing because it can cover up the animation a bit, but honestly I think it’s really worth it since it makes the animation look a lot better.

It’s not just done in animation, compositing is done in live action movies too. Whenever they add visual effects, or they need to touch up a shot and make it look more cinematic, a compositor will step in and work their magic.

To do compositing in Toon Boom Harmony, you use these things called nodes, it’s hard to set up the first time but after you’ve done it once you can save your node system and reuse it over and over again. I’ve done this a lot so I can literally composite most shots in like a minute.

Most of the time I don’t draw the shadows manually, I just use the node system to light scenes, it saves a lot of time and still looks pretty good, but sometimes it can create ugly shapes that need to be fixed manually.

There’s this youtube video from THE GUY who added compositing to the show invincible, and wow, just look at how much of a difference it makes. The results speak for themselves, it just makes the visuals pop so much. This makes me wish they could get a little bit more budget for compositing on this series. If not for every single shot, just for important scenes to r by @apokeanimation
