We are joining @gmffestival again on Mar 14-16 with our second curated film & music program at @crumbfactorycollective --

This year we've curated a selection of documentary short films and audiovisual installations, the exhibition explores the Asian diaspora and the evolving cultural landscapes of Asia in recent years. It features artists who take on personal journeys of departure or return, reflecting on and reshaping past memories into new insights and experiences. These works unfold stories of reconciliation—with the self, with others, and with the past and life itself. They invite a sense of openness and wholeness, inspiring engagement with what was once familiar from deeper, new perspectives.

We're in the final stretch with new updates!!
Can't wait to share great short films from a diverse group of international artists followed by epic dance parties on Friday and Saturday night..!!
@vanishworks has just been added to provide dancefloor visuals for Saturday night as well as a dj set from Eddie Merma.
Each day has a different setup, so take a deeper look into the event details for the day you want to join us. See you there!

We've just wrapped up the second curated film & music program “Departure / Return” last weekend — 3 inspiring days of international art-film screenings and DJ sets, showcasing diverse, contemporary perspectives in sound and vision.

“Departure / Return” is an independent program specially curated by Apolis presented during @gmffestival held once again at @crumbfactorycollective in Montpelier VT. The weekend-long program (3/14-3/16) featured international and experimental short documentaries and audio-visual installations, while deep listening sessions and dancefloor DJ sets unfolded on both Friday and Saturday night. As always, this year’s program invited a mix of local and international collaborators from the Apolis community, who shared deeply personal and universally powerful narratives through their works.

“In 2019, I began writing yearly reflections, intending to compile them into a film by 2022. This is a letter in images—an independent record of the past four years, a message to my family, my friends, and the world, in case one day I am no longer here.

Four years later, I can finally sense the shift—from gradual change to transformation. In this film lie my conflicts, sorrow, and the parts of me I once hid, alongside love, courage, and hope.”

Trot Trot Trot (2023)

Trot Trot Trot documents the isolated existence of Zhou Bao Yang, an 86-year-old immigrant from Guangdong, China, who resides alone in the suburban outskirts of Los Angeles. The absences in Zhou’s life are only alluded to, and the causes of her discontent, if any, remain concealed. Originally translated from German into English, the film features passages translated into Chinese and narrated in Taishanese, Zhou’s spoken dialect. The words belong to the fictional schoolboy of Swiss author Robert Walser, who notes, “A boy can speak words of great wisdom and great stupidity at practically the same moment.”

Trot Trot Trot traces the quiet dignity of our labor and mortality, as one tends to what little garden they have left.

Snack Sakura (2024) by @fromhitolo

Snack Sakura follows acclaimed Canadian photographer @gregforaday across Japan in search of a woman he once knew. Meditating on memory, art, and life between cultures as he obsessively journeys from town to town, Girard’s quest is sparked by a single clue: “Last I heard, she was working in a snack bar called Sakura.”

Proudly contrarian but relentlessly curious, Girard has earned a cult following for his five-decade career photographing overlooked corners and massive transformation across Asia. A personal narrative, a road movie, and hybrid documentary, Snack Sakura is the first ever look into his creative process.
