What can we learn from John Steinbeck’s The Pearl about how oppressive social systems are enforced for so many generations?

Kino is an Indigenous fisherman born into an exploitative system where the wealthy monopolistic merchants buy his community’s pearls for the lowest possible prices, reinforcing the cycle of poverty. When Kino and his wife Juana find the Greatest Pearl of the World, he strikes at the foundation of this system, casting doubt on the legitimacy and stability of the system. He represents the possibility of breaking free from the system with sheer luck, something that his oppressors would do anything to prevent. This results in his tragic downfall.
