It’s been a shitty last six months. Especially the last three. There’ve been some moments that haven’t broken me down. I’m grateful that I get those. Even if they’re little ones. by @appleshampoo

My dad passed away a little over a month ago. He was my constant—my friend and my father. I haven’t posted anything because it’s been too hard. Even writing this is difficult. Every time I acknowledge it, it feels like a Mandela effect, like I’ve crossed into some alternate universe I don’t want to be in. Maybe that’s why I avoid mentioning it—because I’d rather live in the old one.

I looked up to him and still do. As I got older, I realized he was just like the rest of us—flawed, but trying to be better. We were kindred spirits, both having struggled mentally and with our vices.

It was sudden. One day he was here, and then he wasn’t. But it comforts me knowing he’s not struggling anymore—now he can rest.

He taught me how to move through this world. Never give up, even when it’s hard. He was the strongest person I knew because nothing stopped him from getting up—even when life beat him to shit, he still kept coming. And that’s what he passed on to me.

People saw him as stoic and stern—and he was—but he was also funny. He told corny jokes like I do. He loved to talk. He and I differed in that way, but it came easy to him. He loved music like I do. Some nights he’d sit on the porch, lost—or maybe found—in it. Music was euphoric for us. It took us places, and we’d go there together in our minds.

I’m thankful for him. He sacrificed so much for me. You hear that a lot when someone loses a parent, but it’s true. I’ve found that most clichés become real the more people you love pass away.

I’ve had my moments since he passed. They’ve become less frequent.

I’ll finish this off saying:

You didn’t realize how much you were loved. In your final moments and after, you were surrounded by family. You thought it was just me, but you touched so many lives. I love you, Dad. I miss you. Thank you for 37 years with me. With your strength, I will do better—for the both of us. by @appleshampoo
