Last October, I shared one of the simplest Photo Bestie ideas I've ever had, and funny enough, it's also one of the ideas people STILL mention to me.

Every Halloween, I take one picture of each of my kids in their costume, print it as a 4x6 and add it to their little Halloween photo album. Then the albums get packed away with the Halloween decorations until next year, when we pull them back out, flip through them, add another picture and wonder how the heck these children managed to grow an entire year when I'm pretty sure we JUST did this.

That's it. One photo. Once a year.

But after you've done it for a few years, you realize you're not really looking at an album full of Halloween costumes anymore. You're watching your kid grow up, one Halloween at a time. The missing teeth, the questionable costume choices, the characters they were completely obsessed with and you somehow already forgot about...it's all in there.

So I finally gave this little tradition a permanent home on the Photo Bestie blog, along with some tips for getting the Halloween pictures you'll actually want to remember. Including my very important recommendation to take the picture BEFORE trick-or-treating starts, because once they can hear other children outside collecting Reese's Cups, your artistic vision means absolutely nothing to them.

And Pal, if you do nothing else with your Halloween pictures this year, print ONE.

Future you is going to be really freaking glad you did.

You know what I love about Holiday Truck sessions?

Yes, the truck is the main event, but it takes place on a beautiful property along the Yardley Canal, and the “backyard” serves up some pretty great fall magic too.

So if you want the festive Christmas card AND a neutral family portrait you can keep on the wall all year, we can absolutely do both. Or just fall...or just truck ;)

Just let me know ahead of time that you’d like some fall variety, and I’ll add it to our plan.

I have figured something out. There is one in almost every family. You know her. Honestly, you might BE her.

She knows when picture day is. She knows what everyone is wearing. She has already checked the soccer schedule, the dance schedule and the Eagles schedule before she even thinks about booking. She is the reason everyone owns something that coordinates without technically matching. She knows they need new family pictures before anyone else realizes they need new family pictures. And she is almost always the one who sends me the message.

I call her The Family Historian. And yes, sometimes the Family Historian is Dad. We see you too, sir. Hahaha.

And I LOVE them.

Because here's the funny thing...the Family Historian probably thinks they're just booking fall pictures. They're thinking Christmas cards. A new picture for the wall. Maybe finally replacing that frame in the hallway with the photo from three years ago.

But that's not really what they're doing. They're keeping the record.

They're the reason there will someday be pictures of the missing teeth, the questionable haircuts, the growth spurts and the year somebody refused to wear anything except sneakers. They're the reason you can look back and see when the baby stopped looking like a baby. They're the reason the person usually taking all the pictures is actually IN some of them.

Year after year, the Family Historian keeps showing up and saying, "Okay everybody, we're doing this." And they do. Even if the rest of the family doesn't fully appreciate the operation they're running. Hahaha.

So yes, I photograph families. But every fall, I also get to work with a whole bunch of Family Historians, and Pals, I think they're pretty freaking awesome.

A photograph never grows up.
