Today we say farewell to the name The Floral Flock and welcome to Appleton Flower Fields.

My grandad has always been my inspiration to grow plants. All year I would look forward to school finishing for summer and get to go down to my grandparents in Yorkshire and help on my grandad’s allotment.

From that I started growing vegetables as a kid and dreamed of having the space to grow vegetables for a living. Throughout the years, and for many reasons, while flowers were always there, they slowly took over. But my love and passion for growing began all those years ago on my grandad’s allotment.

So it just feels right that we will now have the family surname as part of this wild flowery adventure 🌷🚚🌞 by @appletonflowerfields

That’s a wrap on the ‘26 season.

Thank you so much to every single person who bought some flowers from me this year, I cannot tell you how grateful I am. Everyday I’m living my childhood dream. I have loved every second of sharing my flowers with you all.

Thank you to everyone who came and lent a hand ,or just popped by to lift my spirits, when I needed it.

There are some exciting things to come next season that I will start sharing very soon 🤞🌸 by @appletonflowerfields

Unfortunately today’s Pick your own session won’t be able to go ahead 😔

We have had a hard frost and the season has come to a close a day too soon.

Sorry to everyone who was planning to come along. It will be a lovely sunny day at the farm, if you are still coming to Barnhill please pop by and you are welcome to wander a very wintery flower field 🥶😔🌸 by @appletonflowerfields

I got a huge response to some end of season pick your own days this week. So all details you need are below, if you have any questions please ask in comments and I’ll get back to you 😊

The pick your own days will be at Barnhill Farm.
Friday 16th from 10:30 with last entry to the field at 2pm.
Saturday from 10am with last entry to the field expected at 3pm. (There is now a strong chance of frost on Friday night which would mean Saturday being cancelled. I will update my story in the coming days but I suggest coming along on Friday for more certainty.)

You can access the field through the farm shop.

It will run as first come first served on these dates.
I am extremely limited on buckets so if the field is very busy there may be a wait for a bucket.
I will ask everyone to follow some sanitisation methods for the snips between cuts of the dahlias, it is very important so I really appreciate everyone following it. I will explain fully when you arrive.

The field is incredibly wet so please bring good wellies and wear warm waterproof clothing.

I will have three pricing options on the days, £15 per paper cup (until the cups are sold out), £25 per bucket and £50 for a large bucket.
If a certain bucket isn’t available at the time you arrive I will do my best to work out another option 😊

Last of all, I’m just a one man band so I have never opened the field like this before, please be patient if it’s busy and I’ll try and be with everyone who needs me as quickly as possible 😁

Looking forward to seeing you all and rounding out the season together 🌸🍁😁 by @appletonflowerfields

I’m soaking up every second of flowers before this season come to an end 🌸🍁 by @appletonflowerfields

The end of the season is almost in sight. This year my last day of flowers will be on 17th October.

I’m making sure I enjoy every second of the flowers while they’re still here. I’ll be keeping plenty of bouquets at Barnhill over the next few weekends. So if you’d like some flowers before the end of the season either pop along to Barnhill or drop me a message 😊🌸🍁 by @appletonflowerfields

Two of my favourite first year seedlings.

Last year I made more of an effort to try and get very pale pink and white seedlings that would be good for cut flower.
My seedlings absolutely have to stand up to strong winds and heavy rain. Both of these were picked after the worst rain of the season, blooms completely clean, stems strong and undamaged.

I really love all colours so I typically get a lot of very bold seedlings appear so it’s nice to see some paler ones coming through this year. There are a few other very pale pinks appearing that I am loving too.

Fingers crossed these two make good tubers 🤞🌸 by @appletonflowerfields

Bloomquist York & Sissinghurst

The side by side I have been asked for all season long. I’ve seen the two be confused all season long too.

Bloomquist York has been late to bloom but I can finally show the big differences in these striking dahlias.

Bloomquist York is a much bigger bloom and, on its own, is very striking. But anything next to Sissinghurst looks very muted.

They really are very different when together, both the plants and blooms. I absolutely love both and will continue growing both 🍁🌸

Bouquets are back at Barnhill, ready for a lovely September weekend 🍁🍂🌸

It’s been a very busy week so I’m going to take a little time off this weekend and get ready to do it all again next week.

I have some availability next week for bouquets and buckets, so if you’d like some Scottish flowers before the end of the season is here, drop me a message 😊🌸 by @appletonflowerfields

September is the best flower month of the year.

I’m very grateful to be kept so busy the past few weeks. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind so I’ve not managed to stop to take many pictures so here’s just a few of the highlights.

Lots of bouquets at Barnhill this weekend with more to come tomorrow 🌸🌸 by @appletonflowerfields

Snoho Doris

One of my all time favourite dahlias. It’s not typically available in the UK so it was top of my wishlist for a long time until I got two cuttings about 5 years ago.

Since then I’ve managed to build up a lot of plants over the years.

I love that each bloom can be totally different with petals ranging from a creamy peach colour to a brick red coral. It’s one of the few dahlias I also love leaving side buds on, they just add something extra to this lovely flower.

And that’s a wrap on Wisley!

I have had the absolute best time this week, all the pain staking work and running on no sleep or food to make this happen has been worth every second.

Thank you so much to everyone who stopped to talk to me. I’ve cried so many times hearing how much people loved and appreciated my flowers and what I do with them. Thank you to everyone who bought some flowers, it was such fun getting to create them with a wonderful team.

I can’t believe people sat down to listen to me talk at an RHS show! Thank you to the wonderful @theblossomplot for being with me in it!

It was very cool to get to judge the people’s exhibit on Saturday, my wishlist grew a fair bit during the process.

It has been an honour to be the first Scottish flower farmer to be asked to come along and represent what we can do up north, thank you to the fantastic exhibitors and everyone who made me feel so welcome from the moment I arrived.

There is a lot of people to thank but for now I’d like to thank the wonderful person who asked me to do this. You knew I was mad enough to say yes and had a lot more faith in me than I have in myself.

I’ll hopefully share some of the journey to get here and the other exhibitors displays but for now the long journey home begins. by @appletonflowerfields
