Your child’s college application is not just a checklist of grades, activities, essays, and deadlines.

It is a story about who they are, what they care about, and where they want to go.

As a parent, the right questions can help you understand that story before you start worrying about how to package it.

Instead of asking, “How’s the application going?” try asking:

What are you genuinely curious about?
What do you enjoy learning?
What do you want to explore further?
What do you wish colleges understood about you?

Because the strongest applications are not built by adding random achievements. They are built by understanding the student first.

At Application Ally, we help students turn that understanding into a focused, authentic application strategy.

6 unique topics for NYU’s “Bridge Builder” supplemental essay

1. Being the only beginner in a room of experts
You entered an environment where everyone seemed to speak a language you didn’t. Who helped you contribute, and what did it teach you about making spaces accessible to newcomers?

2. An unlikely friendship that dismantled an assumption
A friendship with someone whose age, background or everyday reality was completely different from yours. What specific assumption did you stop making because of them?

3. Watching someone change the temperature of a divided room
Think of someone who can turn disagreement into curiosity. What do they do differently, and what have you started learning from them?

4. Building a bridge that failed
You tried bringing people together, making something more inclusive or mediating a disagreement, and it didn’t work. What did you misunderstand about trust, timing or listening?

5. Becoming the translator without translating a language
Maybe you explain technical ideas to creatives, research to younger students, or unfamiliar concepts to family. How have you learned to change your communication without changing the idea?

6. Realizing that bringing people together isn’t always the answer
Sometimes bridge-building means giving people space to disagree rather than forcing consensus. What taught you that productive disagreement can be valuable too?

The strongest topic isn’t necessarily the most dramatic one. Look for the story that shows how you understand people, rethink assumptions and create connection.

Save this for your NYU brainstorming session. 📌

Think getting into Oxford is just about having perfect grades and impressive extracurriculars?

Think again.

For Oxford undergrad, your application needs to show something more specific:

👉 You have gone deeply into your subject
👉 You can question ideas, not just memorise them
👉 Your academic curiosity exists beyond the classroom
👉 You can defend and develop an argument through discussion
👉 You actually engage with what you read
👉 You understand why your chosen Oxford college fits how you want to learn
👉 Your strongest asset is how you think

And that last part matters.

Oxford’s tutorial-based teaching means you’re expected to read, discuss, question, defend your thinking, and respond to new ideas.

So before you apply, put your profile through these 7 tests.

How many did you pass? 👀

A strong college essay isn’t about having the most extraordinary story. It’s about having an interesting perspective on an ordinary one.

A family tradition, a failed project, a hobby, a competition, or even a childhood memory can become a great essay if it reveals something about how you think, what changed you, or what you understand differently now.

The question to ask before writing:

“What does this story reveal about me that my résumé doesn’t?”

If the answer is “not much,” keep digging. 👀

Healthcare is much bigger than hospitals.

An MPH can open doors across epidemiology, health policy, biostatistics, global health, consulting, pharma, health tech, and environmental health.

The important part? Your concentration can shape which career paths you’re prepared to pursue.

Should you submit your SAT score or go test-optional? 👀
Not every university follows the same testing policy, and not every SAT score adds value to your application.

In 60 seconds, here’s how to:
✨ Check a university’s testing policy
✨ Find the SAT score range using the Common Data Set
✨ Compare your score against the median and middle 50%
✨ Evaluate your score in the context of your school, country, and intended major.

Remember, your SAT is only one data point in your application. The goal isn’t to chase a number. It’s to make a strategic decision based on your overall profile.

Save this guide for your college application process and follow @application.ally for more strategic admissions content. 🤍

Early Decision isn’t automatically the smarter choice. 👀

Applying ED can strengthen your application strategy, but only when the university actually makes sense for you.

Your college, intended program, profile, financial considerations, and whether it’s genuinely your first choice all matter.

So which universities should you:
✨ Consider ED for
🚫 Skip ED for
🤔 Think about on a case-by-case basis

We’ve broken it all down in our ED guide, including universities like NYU, Brown, UVA, Vanderbilt, and Carnegie Mellon.

Follow @application.ally and Comment “Early Decision” to receive the full guide.
