Appalachia Service Project is excited to share a video overview: About ASP! This video defines our organization, our mission, and our why, with powerful testimony from some of our wonderful homeowners and volunteers. ❤️

The work of ASP is not just about building ramps and repairing leaks, it is also about showing love and compassion to our Central Appalachian neighbors as we work towards the goal of eradicating substandard housing in the region. 🛠️

In 2026, we are celebrating 57 years of this mission, and we will continue driving forward until all of our neighbors have a place that is warm, safe, and dry to call home. 🏡

Decades ago, ASP’s founder Rev. Tex Evans was pondering the question that many ask about the folks who live in the difficult land of Appalachia: Why don’t they just move?

He came to a simple conclusion, one that still rings true today: Because this is where they live.

When Hurricane Helene struck, homes were destroyed in unprecedented floods and wind. Lives were uprooted, and families were left with impossible choices. But even in the face of devastation, one thing remains the same: home still matters.

ASP is helping by rebuilding homes that are stronger and more disaster-resilient - places families can feel safe in for generations to come. But as the 2025 floods bring more destruction, the need is greater than ever. ❤️

You can be part of the solution. Volunteer with ASP. Donate to give families hope. Share this message to spread awareness. Because home and hope matters. ☀️

“This is home.”

Two years after Hurricane Helene, those words carry so much weight. Across Central Appalachia, families are still recovering, rebuilding, and holding close to the places that have shaped their lives.

For many, home is not just a structure. It is the land, the memories, the community, and the place they want to be for the rest of their lives. Stories like this remind us why long-term recovery matters and why ASP is committed to helping families repair, rebuild, and return home.

ASP continues walking alongside families impacted by Helene as they repair, rebuild, and take the next step forward. There is still work to do, and there are still families looking toward their next chapter.

Join us in continuing the work of recovery.

Two years after Hurricane Helene, we are reflecting on how far we’ve come!

101 homes have now been completed through ASP’s Helene recovery efforts, and today we’re dedicating home #102. 🏡

Behind each of those numbers is a family, a home, and a community that has continued moving forward. Each one is a reminder of what can happen when people come together and keep showing up for one another.

We’re incredibly grateful for the partners who have walked alongside us throughout this recovery, including Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief, the American Red Cross, United Way of East Tennessee Highlands, the Johnson County Long Term Recovery Group, Mennonite Disaster Service, and so many others. We are grateful for every organization, church, volunteer, supporter, and neighbor who has helped make this work possible!

There is still work ahead, but today we’re celebrating the progress. We’re celebrating 101 families who are one step closer to long-term recovery, the family receiving the keys to home 102, and the many people who have helped make each one possible.

102 homes down. 98 to go!

Two years later, we’re grateful for how far we’ve come, hopeful for what’s ahead, and thankful to be in this work and in these communities for the long haul. ❤️ by @appservproject

September 27 will always hold a difficult place in Appalachia. Two years ago today, Hurricane Helene changed our region in unimaginable ways. Today, we stand alongside our Appalachian friends and neighbors to reflect on what happened, but also to honor the strength, resilience, and deep-rooted hope of the Appalachian community.

Appalachia Service Project is honored to be part of this community and part of the long term recovery. Our team was on the ground the next day, serving alongside our neighbors, and we are grateful to have continued walking this journey for the past two years.

This work matters because this is home. Our founder, Tex Evans, understood that so well, and his words remain at the core of our mission today. It is not just about building a house, it is about home. The land, the view, the memories, and the roots that have been part of a family for generations.

In the aftermath of the storm, ASP made a commitment to the communities in our region affected by Helene. We promised to repair or rebuild 200 homes and continue being a light as recovery continues across Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia.

Today, we are grateful to share that we have completed 100 of those 200 homes, officially reaching the halfway milestone in our ongoing commitment.

Tomorrow, we will hold a home dedication and commemoration to mark the two-year anniversary of Helene, reflect on the progress made, and bring awareness to the work still ahead.

For two years, we have seen neighbors helping neighbors, communities remaining steadfast in their resolve, and families taking one step at a time toward the next chapter. ASP is grateful for the progress that has been made, and we also know that for every family served, another is still waiting.

As we reflect on the journey to recovery, we invite our ASP family to do the same.

Fall is a beautiful time to serve with ASP, and there’s a place for you here. 🍂

Across Appalachia, volunteers help families make their homes warmer, safer, and drier before winter. The work is practical, repairing floors, roofs, porches, and other parts of a home, and the relationships built along the way are an important part of the experience. 🧡

Join us this fall with your church, a group of friends, your family, or on your own. You’ll spend a few days working alongside ASP staff, listening to homeowners, and helping make a home safer. 🏡

If you have time to give, consider a fall ASP trip! 🤝

Today, we honor the birthday and vision of ASP’s founder, Glenn “Tex” Evans. ❤️
Tex believed in the power of people, service, and faith in action. More than five decades later, that vision continues to guide ASP’s work, from home repairs and new builds to the relationships formed between volunteers, families, and communities.
What started as one bold idea in 1969 has become a lasting movement of love and service across Central Appalachia. We are grateful for Tex’s legacy and for everyone who helps carry it forward. 🏡

Four teams. Four homes. Four families. And one incredible Race to Build. 🏁❤️

After an amazing competition at Bristol Motor Speedway, the final results are in!

🏆 Auburn University, 1st place in their very first Race to Build!
🥈 University of Nebraska
🥉 Iowa State University
4️⃣ Appalachian State University

Congratulations to Auburn on an incredible first year, and to every student who poured their time, talent, teamwork, and heart into these homes. The rankings may mark the end of the competition, but the real win is seeing four homes take shape for four families.

We were honored to have Keith Barber from East Tennessee Foundation join us today to share more about the continued need for Hurricane Helene disaster recovery. That conversation hits especially close to home this year, as one of our Race to Build families was directly impacted by Helene. Their story is one reminder of why this work, and the partnerships that make it possible, continue to matter.

A huge thank you to Express AV, our teams, volunteers, partners, sponsors, Carson and Stacie for hosting our livestream, and the countless people behind the scenes who brought Race to Build to life.

What a weekend. What a community. What a Race to Build. 🏁🏠 It’s Bristol Baby!

Day 2 of Race to Build reminded us just how many people and partners it takes to make this work possible. 🏡❤️

One of the most special moments of the day came when one of our Race to Build homeowners visited the worksite and saw the progress on their new home for the very first time. ❤️ Getting to share in that moment, and seeing what this home already means to the family who will soon call it their own, was a powerful reminder of why we build in the first place.

Today, we were grateful to celebrate a generous check presentation from TVA, a longtime partner whose support continues to help ASP serve families and communities across our region.

We also welcomed NASCAR Cup Series drivers Todd Gilliland, Zane Smith, and Noah Gragson to the build site, and TEMA Commissioner Patrick Sheehan stopped by to see Race to Build in action and connect with our team.

And to close out a full day, a huge thank you to Food City for their generous donation tonight!

From NASCAR to disaster recovery, corporate partners to community supporters, we are incredibly thankful for everyone who shows up alongside ASP and helps make warmer, safer, and drier homes possible.

Day 2, you were a good one. 🏁🔨❤️
