What a wonderful experience attending yesterday’s screening of the short film District of Pupusas! 🎬

The film offers such an interesting perspective on pupusas, DC culture, and the rich history and contributions of the Salvadoran community in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

With approximately 300,000 Salvadorans living in the DMV area, the Salvadoran community is an essential part of our region’s identity, culture, and history. From food and traditions to entrepreneurship and community building, Salvadorans have helped shape the DMV in so many meaningful ways.

A special thank you to Professor Ana Patricia Rodríguez for hosting this wonderful event at the University of Maryland and creating space to celebrate and share these important stories!

I highly encourage everyone to check out this film and keep an eye out for upcoming screenings! 🎬✨

Join us on October 6 for "Our Communities, Our Histories: Engaging Oral History Praxis Across the Salvadoran Diaspora," an online encuentro with a powerful team of Salvadoran scholars. They will discuss the role of oral history in building the emerging field of Central American Studies, including the representation of El Salvador’s transnational community.

Given the ongoing cycles of authoritarianism, censorship, and disinformation in El Salvador and in the Salvadoran diaspora, as well as the historical destruction of archives and distortions of historical memory, the facilitators of this encuentro session aim to start a conversation on the role of oral history in the contemporary moment.

This session is part of Teaching for Change's Teach Central America Week activities. Intro to the event by TFC program specialist @jonaperazacampos

Life and Art in the Washington, D.C.

New Books at MLK Library (901 G St NW)

Continue the conversation with Dr. Ana Patricia Rodríguez tomorrow at 6 PM! ✨ (📍Politics and Prose: Union Market)

In Avocado Dreams, Ana Patricia Rodríguez, an academic featured in #lasmuertesfilm, draws from her own positionality as a Salvadoran transplant to examine the construction of the unique Salvadoran cultural imaginary made in the greater D.C. area. Through a careful reading of the creative works of local writers, performers, artists, and artivists, Rodríguez demonstrates how the people have remade themselves in relation to the cultural, ethnoracial, and sociolinguistic diversity of the area. She discusses how Salvadoran people have developed unique, intergenerational Salvadoreñidades, manifested in particular speech and symbolic acts, ethnoracial embodiments, and local identity formations in relation to the diverse communities, most notably Black Washingtonians, who co-inhabit the region 🥑 taken in Washington, D.C. by @aprodrig77
