Student Rabbi Arielle Korman (she/her), New York, NY

Variations on Kabbalat Shabbat outfits (You can have fun! Not all shuls are the same! Also you can get away with higher heels on Friday because there’s less synagogue choreography.)

Clothing: all @housingworks except for the, uh, breastplate. Not from Housing Works. The dress is from Rodarte for Target (the legendary 2009 collection. Every designer collaboration since then has been exponentially worse.)

Beloved Fiancé: @friendwhoisaboy
(He’s wearing a vintage jacket, vintage Canali pants, Stan Ray socks, and @marcnolanofficial shoes)

Stuffed Manischewitz: @sewyoursoul

Who’s your rabbinic style inspiration? “The Torah. I always want to know what she’s wearing.” taken in New York, New York by @ar_korm

This May, we celebrated both Jewish American Heritage Month and Asian & Pacific American Heritage Month.

Jewish and Asian communities have lots in common. And many belong to both communities.

But Jewish and Asian people share something else: Our communities are positioned as “model minorities.” Sometimes this may feel like a compliment, but it’s actually harmful — and not just to us. It’s a tool; part of the vast machinery of white supremacy, which often pits Jews and Asians against other groups by contrast.

It says: if Jewish and Asian Americans could rise from poverty in this “supposedly racist nation,” it must be that other Americans — namely Black Americans — are just not trying. Or inherently incapable.

It’s dehumanizing and false.

The model minority myth unfairly compares our communities — Americans whose stories did not start with slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow and don’t continue with mass incarceration and targeted voter disenfranchisement — to the group in this nation who every system harms more than helps. All to promote the myth that we already live in a nation where everyone can already thrive equally.

A future with freedom and safety for all means resisting attempts at division. So next time we catch ourselves or those we love repeating model minority tropes, let’s remember what it serves. It’s not ourselves, as Jewish and Asian people. It’s definitely not Black people. And it’s not our vision for a liberated future.

A song adapted from Pirkei Avot. It is not your responsibility to complete the work, but neither are you free to neglect it. A rare sighting of me at the piano, for which I have great love and no experience ♥️ #jewishmusic #pirkeiavot #protestmusic by @ar_korm

A song with lyrics from Psalm 121. It’s a prayer for protection, dedicated especially to those resisting fascism in Minnesota and beyond. The lyrics in English: Bless your comings and your goings from this moment and for all time. May the sunshine never harm you, nor the moonlight in the nighttime. In Hebrew: ישמור צאתך ובואך מעתה ועד עולם והשמש לא יככה וירח בלילה by @ar_korm

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, I’m thrilled to announce the release of my new single, Shachar Avakeshcha! The text is by Ibn Gabirol, one of my favorite poets of all time, who stood and trembled before the dawn somewhere sometime in the 11th century and wrote these words. It’s about being on the precipice of something, about the fear and awe we feel toward our own potential, our own creative expression. This is a song for people wanting to do something big and scary, or small and scary. An enormous thanks to Dan Levine and Jerome Korman who co-produced this song with me. Another thanks to the existence of synths and other-worldly sound effects!! Enjoy! by @ar_korm

It's here! Today, auspiciously on my mom @rabbimira's birthday, it's HERE!

Full of Mercy is available wherever you get your music. Many many more gratitudes are to follow, but let's start here. Thank you @jerrykeyedin, my producer, my dad, and my friend! It was extraordinarily meaningful to make this album with you and especially to have you on piano for most of these songs. You are the greatest accompanist on earth I'm pretty sure.

I'm grateful to release this album in the lead-up to the high holidays. These melodies haunt me and guide me all year, but especially in this moment, as the air turns crisp, the winter dread creeps in, and at the same time, there's an uncanny and precious kind of hope in the air.

Happy listening <3 by @ar_korm

Absolutely stoked to announce that Molly Schulman and I will be going out on our own and running Yom Kippur services as a team this year. Molly (@mschulz45 !) is full of life, profoundly grounded, and the greatest thought partner I could ask for as we prepare for the (rapidly approaching!) new year. More information and registration to come. It’s been a tough year and I’m just so happy to be trying something experimental, something both deeply rooted and new. by @ar_korm

The tl;dr— we’re making an album! Link in bio to support so we can finish the project and get some incredible musicians and sound engineers paid ♥️ — and now some more words. The past few months, my incredible thought partner and producer (who is also my dad) and I have been hard at work working on an album of High Holiday music. When I sat down to think about what I wanted to do for my first album of Jewish music, I felt this strong urge to reach back to my roots.

We're singing some classics, and some lesser-known melodies. The music of the High Holidays is majestic. It's intimate. It's the soundtrack to the trembling we feel facing ourselves at our most vulnerable and in the face of the unpredictable year to come. This music lives in my bones, and was one of the first things about Jewish religious culture that I fell in love with as a kid.

During this painful year, I have been reaching towards these melodies. I have poured my heart into them, and I can't wait to share them with you.

With your help, we can bring this music into the world. Plus, getting to work on this with my dad, connecting generation to generation, feels like exactly how I want to live into this spiritual tradition. (Photo by @bmrk_media ) by @ar_korm

I wrote a poem in memory of Vivian Silver, z"l (may her memory be for a blessing). I've turned off comments to preserve a little sacredness, posting this the day after the world learned of her death. I hope it can bring a little comfort, especially to those fighting to continue and deepen her legacy. It's clear from so many who loved her, including people who disagreed with her, struggled with her, and still loved her, that she would never have accepted this siege on Gaza in her name. by @ar_korm
