ara contemporary is pleased to present ‘I will tell you when I am home’, a group exhibition bringing together works by Arlette Quỳnh-Anh Trần, Khairulddin Wahab, Nazif Lopulissa, Mar Kristoff, Phuong Linh Nguyen, and Shuyi Cao. Taking its title from Hala Alyan’s memoir, which traces personal narratives of exile and belonging, ‘I will tell you when I am home’ brings together six artists whose practices engage with the complexities of place and displacement. The exhibition navigates the uncertain terrain between the desire for rootedness and the inevitability of movement. Their works map the notion of unraveling and becoming, of loss and redemption, to belong and belonging. In doing so, the artists explore how self, memories, and identity emerge through displacement: through the act of inhabiting the in-between. ara contemporary introduces Nazif Lopulissa, whose interdisciplinary practice explores the intersections of place, history, and identity. Drawing on personal and collective histories, his work examines belonging, decolonisation, and cultural legacy. Coming from Moluccan-Turkish heritage, weaving has been central to Lopulissa’s practice since 2021 following the discovery of an ikat scarf belonging to his late Moluccan grandfather. The encounter marked a turning point, prompting him to engage with histories of the Moluccan diaspora that have long been suppressed. Through weaving, two images of differing - even conflicting - narratives coexist within a single surface, held together through physical tension. In ‘Trying to Compose It, Not to Bury It’, a portrait of Queen Wilhelmina in Amsterdam’s Royal Palace is woven together with the fading image of the Cooktown orchid (Anggrek Larat), the official floral emblem of Maluku Province. The Royal Palace was where sovereignty was transferred from the Netherlands to Indonesia in 1949 - a moment that also precipitated the displacement of around 12,500 Moluccan soldiers, including Lopulissa’s grandfather. Beginning with his own family history, the work traces histories that continue to shape the present, even when overlooked. Working with found imagery and his personal archive, Mar Kristoff explores memory, identity, and belonging through painting.‘Taman Ayun’ reconstructs an online photograph of a family from Semarang spending a leisurely day at Taman Ayun Temple in Bali. Layered beneath are graphite drawings based on photographs from Kristoff’s family archive. Bringing together different people, places, and moments in time, the work reflects on a shared experience of place across personal histories while questioning what happens when a place is no longer the place we remember.A related inquiry emerges in ‘Castle’, which reconstructs the interior of a room in Windsor Castle from a twentieth-century tourist postcard found in a thrift store in Melbourne. Marking his first presentation with ara contemporary, Khairulddin Wahab’s practice draws from cultural geography, environmental history, and postcolonialism in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Working with archival materials, found images, and iconography rooted in the region, he constructs layered tableaux that examine the intersections of history, politics, and the natural world.In ‘A Forest of Names’, ghostly figures emerge within vividly coloured landscapes, gradually revealing themselves as plantation labourers. Revisiting plantation histories through a postcolonial lens, the work reflects on the enduring structures of power embedded within Southeast Asia’s environmental history. As we approach the opening of ‘I will tell you when I am home’, ara contemporary is pleased to introduce Nguyễn Phương Linh, whose multidisciplinary practice spans video, installation, and sculpture.Currently on view as part of the Uzbekistan National Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale, ‘Qi (2026)’ extends Phương Linh’s long-term research into salt, geology, and environmental transformation. Presented within ‘The Aural Sea’, the installation tunes into the flows of energy that circulate the seabed, remnant waters, and atmosphere, imagining the landscape as a body whose organs evolve in real time to live in a changing Aral. Through moving sculpture and colour-graded photographs of the Aral landscape, Qi extends her long-term inquiry into the connections between bodies and geographies, exploring how the land we live on impacts our genetic memories.Nguyễn Phương Linh’s work will be presented as part of ‘I will tell you when I am home’, opening at ara contemporary on 11 July. by @aracontemporary

Ahead of her presentation in ‘I will tell you when I am home’, ara contemporary is pleased to introduce Shuyi Cao, whose practice explores material transformation across sculpture and moving image, investigating the intersections of ecology, science, technology, and cosmology.Developed through research initiated during her residency at Ruang Arta Derau, the works presented in the exhibition bring together geological, marine, and industrial materials collected across Indonesia, extending her investigation into material memory, ecology, and transformation.Cao has been named one of Wallpaper* US400, recognising the creatives shaping the cultural landscape in the United States today. ara contemporary is pleased to share works by Alisa Chunchue, previously exhibited in ‘No One’s Ark’ at Bilker Bunker.Conceived around the tensions between the bunker and the ark-as spaces of refuge, uncertainty, and imagined futures-the exhibition brings together four artists whose works reflect on protection, violence, memory, and survival.Presented in the exhibition, Alisa Chunchue’s ‘I Remember How It Felt’ examines the traces of sustained bodily harm through repeated incisions on stainless steel, referencing the body on a medical bed, while fragile glass reflects bodily vulnerability. Installed within the bunker, the work redefines the exhibition space as both refuge and shelter, while unsettling the idea of safety.
