I’m sure as artists, we all have our bad days… months… years. I was having a particularly bad time for weeks now, because my work stopped feeling “good” and “fun” to me. My shapes were all wrong, I kept falling into a weird space of trying to make things semi realistic, even though I don’t want that for my work. Everything felt off. Turns out what I needed was a great chat with an art friend (an idol, honestly), and to be reminded that I still have the “fun” in me. So here’s to having great friends, and not giving up. (The third slide is the previous version I did years ago. Last slide is a bunch of notes I took).

What if I animated Stranger Things?

I’ve always loved drawing Eddie Munson, but noticed I kept drawing him differently every time I drew, simply because I didn’t put down a set of rules for drawing him. I thought for a long time about what it would look like if I was designing for a 2d version of Stranger things-
First off, there must be a simple enough design to draw over and over again. If I was animating a tv show, I’d want to be able to redraw the characters over and over again, and have them still be recognizable. Colors would have to be simplified. Shapes defined.

So, while this isn’t a perfect design, it would be a start. Maybe I’ll do some more stranger things characters in this style, now that I have a set of rules defined.

Redrew an older drawing of mine, feeling much better about the update.
I’m redrawing a lot of my older stuff because, while it was fun at the time to draw it, most of the drawings lack in critical thinking. I’m trying to understand my decisions more, make more intentional and thought-out choices. I want to know HOW I’m accomplishing things, not to just do things and not remember. The last slide is the previous drawing.
