Bringing 16mm cinematography to the University of Portsmouth as part of the “advanced cinematography” module I run for third year students. I was incredibly impressed at how fast these students picked it up in such a short session. Two more sessions to go this week! Always one of my favourite things to teach, and hopefully one of their favourites to learn!

Thanks @ifilmlove for the photos and bringing your directorial insight into it. And @jackpalladinoh for helping out. by @aramatkinson

I brought our @newrenaissancefilmfestival BEST UK FILM trophy into the university to show the students and get a photo with our associate producer/DIT, and my long time friend and collaborator Riyadh Haque. @ifilmlove has been involved in Green Grass’s journey long before most people and this week has reminded me of how lucky we are where now, 14 years after meeting, we get to spend our days teaching together.

We might both be writers, directors, and teachers, but we’ve also fulfilled just about every role on set for each other and it’s so nice to still be sharing the wins together. by @aramatkinson

So proud and privileged to have won BEST UK SHORT at @newrenaissancefilmfestival! We met so many amazing filmmakers who had such kind words and loved getting to screen alongside so many talented creatives. Every success and selection is down to the cast, crew, and supporters, from the APs to crowdfunders to friends who let us borrow a prop last minute. And of course, this journey only started because a @bfinetworkfhse exec was prepared to take a chance on us back in 2023, and we will forever be grateful to Nicole Davis for that. Not to mention @lingvano @signsolutionsuk @skillshare and @projectseagrass and all the scientists and filmmakers who helped us in.

Congrats team! And congrats to all the other winners and honourable mentions and filmmakers who screened! Big love.

Catch the film at any of our upcoming festivals, including Bolton this Thursday!

Disclaimer: AI content tag is due to us using Canva, thats all. Rather annoying!

At the start of our festival journey we promised ourselves to advocate for accessibility and sign in any Q&A/acceptance speeches. We might make mistakes and not always be perfect, but hopefully each time we get to do this we help filmmakers and festivals realise the barrier to accessibility is easier to overcome than we might imagine. Thank you to NRFF for giving us a platform and recognising Green Grass how you have.

@sebastianclewlow plays Ryan in our film and has been an amazing support of GG. We are so lucky to have the people we do in this project, and to also see @mattemeryldn and @lydiaestellelb at the screening was amazing. If you get a chance to work with any of our cast we will be their #1 fans. They’re the literal best.

Thank you @newrenaissancefilmfestival for being our first London screening! It was a joy to screen alongside some other great films and so lovely to see some of the cast, crew, friends, and students there. NRFF are the loveliest organisers, will definitely be coming again!

If you didn’t get a chance to come, check the link in bio for next screenings, including Bolton, London Breeze, Aesthetica, San Jose, and Cambridge! by @aramatkinson

🎬 Inclusivity is at the core of Girls On Film, and we’re proud to champion equality in the film industry. GREEN GRASS is an important landmark in the representation of women and the D/deaf community, on and off screen.

GREEN GRASS follows Claire and Declan, two D/deaf university students who develop a friendship, share their experiences and build new relationships with the D/deaf community.

The short has a women-led crew, including: producer Makenna Guyler, 1st AD Klarissa Webster, sound recordist India Holdstock, and colourist Sara Buxton, to name a few. It features the brilliant Natalia Staszek as the lead actress. Natalia is represented by THE DEAF SET, which delivers authentic deaf representation on and off screen.

GREEN GRASS is currently on a festival run, and screens in London at Aesthetica Short Film Festival in November. We encourage you to see it.

FILM FESTIVAL INTERVIEW | 2026

GREEN GRASS from writer/director Aram Atkinson, recently won Best Director Short Film First Prize @flickers.riiff. We asked Aram what it means to share his film @asffestival, @boltonfilmfest & @newrenaissancefilmfestival:

"I am ridiculously excited. It is shaping up to be a busy few months! I am going to attempt to attend every festival I can because you never know if and when these opportunities will come around again. We haven’t had a chance to do a cast and crew screening yet, so there are a few members of the team who still haven’t seen it and I hope they, and new audiences alike, feel it is a worthy watch.

It is also great because we had to get inventive with some of how we financed our film, which we managed to do by getting some brands to sponsor the film (@lingvano, @signsolutionsuk, and @skillshare) and through crowdfunding too. These festivals show their investment wasn’t for nothing and gives all our supporters a chance to experience it on the big screen. I can’t imagine the work it takes to run a festival, so I am very grateful they exist because films are made to be seen in the cinema."

Turned 35 this week (halfway to 70 baby…)

The week has come along with some lovely news that Green Grass (@findinggreengrass) has been selected for two great festivals (to be announced soon), as well as a special screening, and is also nominated for Best UK Short and Best Emerging Talent at NRFF along side some amazing directors!

I was getting (deservedly) ripped by several people for using 10-year old headshots lol, so very thankful to @court_wong for taking some nice photos of me in my preferred habitat!

I feel like I’ve changed a lot in the past 10 years as a person, especially these past four years. It’s been a grind getting Green Grass (@findinggreengrass) made, but watching it in cinemas with people makes it 100% worth it. It has honestly been an experience like no other and it’s solidified many things I believe and what I have spent 15 years working towards, and exactly where I want my future to go.

I have met so many lovely people this past month and year. Here’s to all the lovely people I might meet in the next year! by @aramatkinson

It was lovely to be asked by Kara to sit down a few months ago on zoom and chat about my career, educating, and @findinggreengrass. The full interview is now out in her first @prequel.magazine release and on YouTube! You can download the full magazine that has an incredible range of interviews from festival founders (the founder of Aesthetica actually!) to recent graduates now working on film sets, or watch my interview on the prequel magazine YouTube channel. Thanks for having me Kara! Apologies I am not signing in this video, it came a few months ago in the midst of marking (hence my ragged appearance) but there are captions available :) by @aramatkinson
