The Dayton Arcade rotunda has seen a lot since 1904, including decades when it sat dark, empty, and frozen in time.

On October 22, I’ll be giving a talk down in The Tank, right below the rotunda, where I'll cover the Arcade’s eeriest era and how it came back from the dead, plus some hidden stories from the surrounding blocks, with plenty of old photos to help tell the story.

Sitting proudly on the corner of Fourth and Main Streets, the Kuhns Building is the Arcade’s oldest structure, constructed in 1882-1883. This building speaks to the Arcade’s current arts and innovation focus, as it had one of the first postal innovations of its time - a mail chute!

Dayton Vistas writes, “A mail chute saved time and effort for tenants located on upper floors who previously had to walk downstairs and outside to place their mail in mailboxes on the street. They now could simply put their mail in a deposit box located on their floor which traveled down the chute to a central location on the ground floor where it was then picked up.

Officially, Dayton is not the place where [the mail chute] was invented… but according to research from Curt Dalton, a Daytonian came up with almost the exact same invention. That person was Thomas J Payne, a Black elevator operator in the Kuhns Building” who convinced Benjamin Kuhns to install a galvanized rainpipe chute.

“Some sources call the Kuhn’s example the first mail chute in an office building, or first “commercial mail chute,” which actually turns out to be a significant distinction. Federal law at the time only allowed for mailboxes to be placed in public buildings, such as government offices, hotels, and train stations, and the earliest examples were limited to such buildings.

Thus the Kuhn’s Building chute was ahead of its time, as evident in Dalton’s description of how “permission was obtained from the cautious post office” to install it.” The mail chute no longer exists in the Kuhns Building, but Payne’s entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well at the Arcade.

It’s a #TransformationTuesday perfect for autumn! 💎🍂

16 original acorn baskets adorn the second floor of the Arcade’s Rotunda Building. Made of tin, these decorative accents were repainted to their original hues by Blanck Studios during the Arcade’s 2020 redevelopment.

The acorn baskets fit right in with the rest of the festive marketplace décor in the Rotunda!
