Hale Ku’ai Pavilions // Urban Space Design

Arch 490 // Spring 2025

Honolulu is often percieved as an inherently un-Hawaiian space. This projects goal is to deconstruct this narrative by implementing urban acupuncture contextualized in historic land use in the area.

The site runs from a canoe wharf, through a series of programmed gardens and Hale Ku’ai (temporary retail spaces), concluding at Kamali’i park. The landscape is informed by Ahupua’a land tenure as well as lei and Lã’au Lapa’au practices to promote interaction between people and place through connection with bio-culture.

The forms of Hale Ku’ai and landscape elements are derived from circulation studies as to minimally impact the natural flow of the urban expirience. taken in Downtown, Honolulu by @arch.kenny

Wa’u Niu // Coconut Scraper

Arch 494 // Fall 2024

Carved from solid hardwood and inlaid with a hand-cut shell scraper, this contemporary Wa’u Niu (coconut scraper) reimagines a tool embedded in the rhythms of Pacific life. For most, the wa’u niu exists as nothing more than a humble board-often weathered, uneven, with a crude piece of metal nailed to the end.

Yet it was a conduit between generations, hands, and the sustaining labor of preparing ‘ai. This piece honors that memory, grounding it in form and material. The organic curves and joinery recall the intimate relationship between tool, land, and hands. The mother-of-pearl scraper stewards the program of the piece, refrencing visual heritage of shell in traditional Pacific art. This object is more than functional; it challenges the lack of representation of Pacific experiences in contemporary design. It asserts that tools, rituals, and stories deserve to occupy space — crafted, considered, and celebrated. taken in Mānoa, Hawaiʻi by @arch.kenny

Plinth + Pavilion

Arch 200B // Spring 2026

The Plinth and Pavilion project investigates how orthogonal subtractions can construct spatial depth, procession, and atmospheres of light within a seemingly rigid geometric order. Beginning with a monolithic plinth, a series of precise, triangular cuts carve voids that destabilize the mass, producing a layered sequence of thresholds and framed apertures. These subtractions operate not as absence, but as instruments of spatial calibration, compressing and releasing circulation while choreographing movement. Through subtraction and reinterpretation of form, the project transforms orthogonal discipline into experiential richness, using mass and void to steward a carefully sequenced precession through changing intensities of light and enclosure.

Multigenerational Dwelling // Physical Model

Arch 200A // Fall 2025

This project explores scales of public and private spaces in multigenerational housing which prioritizes ambiguity between defined “units”, creating an environment of flexibility which responds to the changing needs of an extended family.

It resists the isolating homogeneity of American single family housing typologies by facilitating interaction between people in a “village” of unconventional relationships between thatched orthogonal volumes and polycarbonate curvilinear nesting areas.

The architecture is experienced as a series of thresholds where volumes compress and expand, compartmentalizing programs into separate architectural bodies. taken in University of California, Berkeley by @arch.kenny
