Hey everyone!
Welcome to my little corner of the design world. I’m Elli Ward, an architecture student at Kansas State University, and this page is where I’ll be sharing my studio work.

I’m passionate about design and problem solving, and I’m excited to document my journey and growth here. I am finishing up my first year in the ENVD program and am excited to begin my specialized degree path of architecture in the years to come.

Feel free to follow along as I grow my architectural design skills and knowledge in the studio. by @arch.studio.elli

Last week, I wrapped up my summer internship at CMBA Architects, and I’m really grateful for the experience.

This summer gave me the opportunity to learn more about the architecture profession, gain hands-on experience, and see what goes into a project beyond what we typically learn in the classroom. I was able to work alongside and learn from people in different roles, which gave me a better understanding of the industry and the process behind creating meaningful spaces.

I’m thankful to everyone at CMBA who took the time to teach me, answer my questions, and make this such a great experience. I’m excited to take what I’ve learned into the next year of school and continue growing as a future architect.

Thank you, CMBA Architects, for a great summer! by @arch.studio.elli

Manhattan Commons Archive is a redesign of the Riley County Historical Society Museum and Archive, creating a new civic destination for preserving and sharing the history of Manhattan.

The building's form is inspired by the 45-degree geometry found throughout nearby campus housing. These angled volumes are strategically oriented to maximize natural daylight and house the program elements most closely tied to learning and engagement, including the main gallery, reading gallery, and administrative spaces. In contrast, the archive and performance spaces are located within the orthogonal, more enclosed forms, reflecting their connection to the preservation and interpretation of Manhattan's history.

My favorite feature of the project is the exterior amphitheater, which seamlessly connects to the interior performance stage. Large operable openings allow the gallery to expand into the plaza, transforming the space into a flexible venue for community gatherings, performances, and special events. by @arch.studio.elli

For this project, we were tasked with designing a gallery to house five artifacts by carving space from two large limestone blocks. The concept emerged from the geometry created when limestone fractures, using those patterns to inform the overall design language. The plan was generated through a series of triangles derived from the Fibonacci spiral, creating a dynamic spatial organization.

Each wall is angled differently to produce a variety of lighting conditions throughout the gallery, allowing visitors to experience the artifacts in constantly changing ways. The primary challenge was creating a compelling and engaging interior experience while leaving the exterior form largely untouched.

For the final model, I constructed an inverse representation of the project, modeling the gallery's void rather than its walls, floors, and roof. This approach emphasized the carved nature of the design and highlighted space itself as the project's central architectural element. by @arch.studio.elli

Finally getting around to sharing this project from my third semester at Kansas State! This single-family home explores the interplay of light and shadow to create an exciting and dynamic atmosphere. My favorite feature is the waterfall and water-skylight installation positioned above the circulation spine. As sunlight passes through the water, shifting reflections and refractions animate the spaces below, creating an ever-changing experience for the occupants. by @arch.studio.elli

Midcrit: The Spatial Prototype
In this project we used our 3D shapes to create a spatial prototype. The prototype needed to fit within a 16x32x48 box, include structure, and include vertical circulation. We were challenged to incorporate a place to view, a place to rest, and a place to gather. The prototype had to be positioned on water. I used this to my advantage and let water be the central element in my concept. This prototype includes a water feature on the roof that allows water to shine in and create beautiful shadows as well as a waterfall that connects to the water below. The gathering space has a strip of glass flooring to allow occupants to see what is happening in the water below and create a dynamic experience. by @arch.studio.elli

Exercise 4: Abstract Structure. For this project, we used the cubes and tiles from our previous projects to make an abstract building. We then added structure, circulation, and scale figures to make it more tangible. This was a so much fun! by @arch.studio.elli

EX03: 3D compositions. For this project we used our previous 2D compositions and translated them into three dimensional, abstract forms. The shapes were supposed to fit in an imaginary cube and be dynamic on each side. After we designed the forms in Rhino, we built them out of foam using hot wire cutters. We then placed our cubes in different configurations to explore the limitless abstract spaces we could make. At the end of this project, our entire studio meshed all of our cubes together to make one abstract composition. This project was very exciting and helped me learn a lot about the design process! by @arch.studio.elli

EX 02: 2D compositions. For this project we created 2D compositions by using only horizontal and vertical lines and irrational numbers. Our challenge was to create “the most beautiful, dynamic composition ever.” by @arch.studio.elli

EX1: Oblique Drawings. For this project we studied a specific house and were asked to draw an exterior oblique, a section oblique, and an exploded axon of it. The house I selected was the “Y” House by Steven Holl. by @arch.studio.elli

Final Project: Artist Retreat

Our site for this project is located in La Jolla, CA. This region experienced a mediterranean climate which makes it perfect for interactions with the outdoors. The site we were designing on is located on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Each student was asked to select an artist whose work, values, or lifestyle could influence the retreat as well as an artifact to reflect our Artist’s work and beliefs.

The artist I code is Olafur Eliasson. He is known for his large scale installations that explore the intersection of art, nature, and perception. He often uses natural elements that heighten viewer’s awareness to surroundings. A key concept in his work is the idea of “Constructed Nature” which shines through in Handscape Haven. It is the belief that interaction with nature is shaped by human design. Eliasson is committed to environmental consciousness and serves locally sourced, organic food in his studio in Berlin.

Handscape Haven is designed for immersive interaction with the natural world explored through the language of touch, perception, and presence, rooted in the symbolism of the hand (which became my parti). Because Eliasson is always exploring the relationship between human construct and nature, this retreat contrasts orthogonal structure with organic flow to evoke the tension between human perception and the natural world.

The artifact I designed is a color changing waterfall wall that defines space. The water produces a calming noise for sensory immersion. It is located in the small studio and has sliding glass doors so the space can be molded to his various needs. by @arch.studio.elli

Commonplace Book

The commonplace book is a visual and verbal record of written statements, sketches, and diagrams. We sketched every day throughout the first year and I saw lots of personal progress! These are just a few of my favorite sketches. by @arch.studio.elli
