D6 Testaccio Housing Project

Nestled between the Mattatoio and the Monte Testaccio, STITCH establishes a transitional architectural language between rigid order and organic lanscape. In a sequence of sptial transformations and shifts, a dynamic space responds directly to its context. The Mattatoio, being defined strictly by x& yaxis, harsh symmetry and angles while the Shanty town is fully enveloped in its organic forms embracing its humble materials and courtyards. STITCH positiones itself in the middle of these two vastly different grids, creating a deliberate misalignment, allowing for a smooth mediation between order and irregularity. On the Western side of the site, the building entrance protrudes from the existing Mattatoio and sudently breaks apart and aligns itself in a parallel manner to the Southern most side of the Mattatoio. This in turn establishes the beggining dialogue between the existing fabric of the site but also it’s departure initiative. As the project grows eastward, there is a gradual but controlled break. Visitors move though controlled geometries that mirror the historic essence of the Mattatoio but while also resisting the fully sporatic nature of the mountain dwellings of Shanty Town. The result is neither fully organic, neither fully rigid, but an in between condition that responds to them both. Programmatically, the project reinforces a certain gradient. Where the public and commerical spaces align with the Mattatoio’s order and logic. In contrast, the residential bar on the East side of the site closest to the Monte, establishes a visual and spatial connection to the fabric, while also reinforcing a sense of inahbitation and retreat within the landscape, while preserving its integrity.
As visitors move through the spaces, they are encouraged to have curiosity, to pause, to explore. The project embodying a stitching strategy where languages and spatial experiences are blended, turns transitions into an experience allowing for all to move seamlessly between orders of space.
