Across domestic, civic, and cultural projects, these practices resist the demand for constant interaction, networking, and engagement, and instead cultivate forms of collective presence that exceed language and help shape communities.

Audiences will enjoy the Danish premiere of recently commissioned films by each of the practices as well as a small exhibition of recent works.

The exhibition is made in a collaboration between Copenhagen Architecture Forum and Architecture at the Edge. It is part of the Cultúr 2026: Sharing Ireland’s Culture marking Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Cultúr 2026 celebrates the wealth of talent among Irish artists working today.

Welcome to the 10th edition of the Architecture at the Edge Festival, Le Chéile - the Architectures of Belonging. PROGRAMME IS LIVE!

From September 17th to 27th, discover a vibrant programme of exhibitions, talks, tours, workshops, panel discussions and screenings across Galway and the West of Ireland.

Frank Monahan, Director of Architecture at the Edge, says about this year’s festival:

“This year, we want to encourage people to think about new ways of practising architecture, and how involving local communities in decision-making can strengthen our sense of belonging and encourage greater participation in social life.

At the heart of it is a simple invitation: to have people at the table, to create spaces where we can come together, share ideas and shape our communities — le chéile.”
And this year, the theme invites us to explore what belonging can look like in practice and how architecture can help create the conditions for a more connected, participatory society.

The full programme of events is LIVE on
architectureattheedge.com with tickets available online too, via the link in bio or Eventbrite.

Among the highlights, AATE26 will present ‘A System for Ordinary Housing’ was highly commended in the 2026 RIAI Silver Medal for Housing, alongside settle, a temporary public interior by TRESTLE exploring gathering and belonging through food and place. For Culture Night Late, with Pálás an Phobail, curated by architect Blanka Major in collaboration with Hinterland and Cathedral (AKA Shampain), will bring together food, sound, architecture and conversation across Galway. The festival will also unveil 14 Flags of Belonging along Druid Lane, celebrating the city’s communities and a nod to the 14 Tribes of Galway.

We can’t wait to share this year’s journey with you!

Architect and urbanist Peter Barber (@peterbarber12) OBE RA took us through decades of groundbreaking work with Peter Barber Architects, exploring the social and political context behind their projects - from radical housing schemes to human-scaled public spaces. Through a rich visual journey, Peter shared the ideas, places, and inspirations that fire their imagination and drive their commitment to building better, more inclusive cities.

A truly inspiring discussion questioning who gets to shape our streets and how design can build stronger communities.

Thank you to Peter Barber for sharing his vision and stories with us, and to everyone who joined the conversation!

Thank you to everyone who walked with us for “Hearth to Hearth through Galway City” led by Róisín Mc Loughlin (@roisintn) Moving through four historic locations: Tigh Neachtain, the Galway Arts Centre, Nora Barnacle’s House Museum, and The Kings Head. We explored how the hearth is much more than just an architectural feature. It is the very heart of where stories are shared, ideas are debated, and communities are sustained.

Achill Amphitheatre - Talk with Michael Gibbons

Archaeologist Michael Gibbons took us back to the story of the Achill Amphitheatre: an open-air theatre built in 1941, commissioned by Major D.J. Freyer and designed by Noel Moffett.

Once a place for musical and theatrical performances, its stepped tiers could hold up to 500 people. Today, the theatre has been largely reclaimed by the landscape, leaving traces for us to uncover and interpret.

Michael shared the history of the site, its people and the theatre itself, offering a glimpse into a remarkable piece of Achill’s cultural landscape and the stories held within it.

The talk forms part of a wider study exploring the surviving remnants of the amphitheatre, with the intention of bringing the site back into focus through music, performance and place.

Thank you to Michael Gibbons and everyone who joined us for the conversation.

in_between - Galway Charter Update
@galwaycitycouncil

Last Friday, we gathered at the Mick Lally Theatre for this year’s Galway Charter Update, exploring how the city can grow while holding on to what makes it distinctive.

Under the theme in_between, the afternoon looked at the spaces and possibilities that exist within Galway’s established urban fabric, and how existing communities, new development and the public realm can work alongside one another.

Through project presentations, panel discussions and an open Q&A, the conversation moved from individual housing and public realm projects to wider questions about how Galway grows, who it grows for, and what we want the city to become.

Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation, and to Galway City Council for supporting and hosting the event as part of #AATE26.

A Place to Gather

@guzzlemag & @almostanywhere_ transformed @settle____ by TRESTLE at #AATE26 into a shared dining experience: a space to cook, eat, talk, and gather. A beautiful celebration of place, hospitality, and community-making through the simple ritual of sharing a meal.

It was a pleasure to step inside the atmosphere of the evening!

Thank you to Guzzle, Almost Anywhere, TRESTLE, and everyone who joined us around the table!

Artist Talk & Cyanotype Workshop with @ambachtarchitecture

The hearth became a starting point for making, gathering and sharing at #AATE26

Centred on ancient Irish settlement structures from the Grooved Ware period (3000–2400 BC), Ambacht’s installation explores the role of fire in early human gatherings and how the hearth could bring people together.

At the centre, a series of interconnecting stools by Nocht Studio @nocht.studio formed another layer of the installation. Designed to create a space to pause, sit and gather around the symbolic hearth, the stools became a familiar point of connection throughout the festival, bringing people together across different events, conversations and encounters at Printworks Gallery.

During the workshop, Adela Gomez introduced participants to the process of creating cyanotype prints from drawings, experimenting with light, form and materials to make their own interpretations.

Thank you to Ambacht and everyone who joined us for an afternoon of making and conversation.

A Place to Gather

A few days ago, @settle____ became a dining room.

For one evening, @guzzlemag + @almostanywhere_ brought their site-specific dinner to TRESTLE’s temporary public interior, transforming the installation into a place to cook, eat, talk and gather.

The evening explored place not as somewhere we are simply given, but as something we can create together through rituals of hospitality, food and gathering.

As the kitchen took shape and the table filled, settle became something new: a temporary home for a few hours, before moving on again.

Thank you to Guzzle, Almost Anywhere and TRESTLE for bringing the installation to life in such a generous and memorable way, and to everyone who pulled up a seat.

A Place to Gather

Galway is recognised for its wild and rugged coastline, but there’s plenty happening on the mainland too. Last week, it played host to the World Oyster Championships and an architecture festival adept at bringing people closer together.

For 10 years, Frank Monahan has been opening doors to spaces and places across the city and county, finding creative ways to engage people with the built environment. We were pleased to play a small part in this year’s Architecture at the Edge programme, gathering for dinner inside TRESTLE’s installation.

Five courses, cooked beautifully by Tom and Aoife. A room fizzing with conversation. Drinks from Glendalough Distillery and Brian’s Wines. Another collaboration we are proud to add to the portfolio.

Big thanks to all involved. taken in Printworks, Galway by @archattheedge

14 Flags of Belonging 💚

Last week, we brought the conversation around 14 Flags of Belonging to #MuseumLates at Galway City Museum, where the artists behind the project came together to share the ideas, stories and questions woven into each flag.

From Druid Lane to the Museum, the flags offer 14 different perspectives on belonging: asking what makes a place feel like home, how we come together, and what it means to belong to a city.

A huge thank you to the artists for sharing their work and to everyone who joined us for the conversation.

And if you haven’t seen them yet, take a walk down Druid Lane and discover the flags for yourself.
