Here’s an experiment I’ve been working on for a little while…

The “Hang Ten Sedge”

After a few years of fishing Ron Grantham’s original “weed wacker” version of the Grantham sedge, I wanted to find a way to remove the bulkiness and slow down the inevitable rolling of deer hair over the cylindrical design. I was introduced to @willbushflies version which simply and completely eliminates the issue.
A few months went by, and while I was checking surf one day this spring, I thought about attempting to make the front of the fly more like the nose of a surfboard. I went home and pounded out the head of a Brad nail and came up with this design.
The fly was tested on the Bulkley in early August and was very successful. It’s not a drastic change but is a noticeable difference in how it elevates the fly to the surface.

If you feel inclined, please give it a try and let me know your thoughts.

Cheers! by @archerbamboo

Summer update pt.1

Earlier this spring I was asked to take over as the operations manager at @spatsizilodge and I couldn’t say no!
With an amazing amount of snow pack in northern BC this past winter, it was leading up to an epic season…
Cold weather kept water flowing steady and the fishing was (as always) top notch. Big thanks to the whole crew for making it another great season. It’s a huge privledge being surrounded by such great folks.

Happy to be home for a few weeks to unwind and spend time with loved ones.
See you on the next adventure🖤 taken in Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Provincial Park by @archerbamboo

The Tonquin salt water taper.

I built the first version of this rod in late 2024 with the intention of filling my dreams of casting big flies from the beach for coho and bonefish down south.

Labelled as the “Tonquin PT” (PT for prototype) I brought this second version with me to @sandyriverspeyclave this spring and it ended up getting more attention than I expected. Thanks to everyone for their input and a special thanks to @gouldstandard_flycasting for showing me what it was capable of.

Final rod design coming soon… taken in Tonquin Beach by @archerbamboo

Thanks to @peninsulastreams and @gofishbc for putting on an amazing exchange of information for Vancouver Island cutthroat trout and inviting us to learn and share what we know. Field work, science presentations, stewardship gatherings, and a few local beers along the way made for an action packed weekend. In his summary of genetics of cutthroat trout Brendan Anderson reminded us that “Each Cutthroat stream holds a unique population that is a snowflake, distinct from the population in the neighboring stream.” As we look back at the city of Victoria we think about all the special people we met and the unique cutthroat trout we learned about. Their is so much work left to do in order to get cutthroat science caught up with our other anadromous fish but it is comforting to know their is an army of talented scientists, anglers and conservationists in this part of the range that are focused on the task. Special thanks to @robinsonsflyfishing @finestatseavic and @wildsalmoncenter for making this opportunity possible for the Coastal Cutthroat Coalition. by @archerbamboo
