Architecture & ceramic practice · Zurich, Switzerland

Arché Studio works at the intersection of architecture, geology, and ceramic craft, transforming raw clay excavated from urban construction sites into objects and material studies. Intercepting subsoil displaced by building processes, the practice explores the thermal behavior of local earth, using the same raw material both as a low-fired terracotta body and as a high-temperature glaze. Through this process, the work reflects on material transformation, circularity, and the geological memory of the city.

Presented as part of Dislocated Utility: Objects out of Place.

Curated by Natascha Madeiski & Paulina Reséndiz

This piece is glazed with material collected from the excavation site of the Wohnsiedlung Guet project by @poolarchitekten in Fellenbergstrasse, Zurich.

While processing the clay, I came across a series of green/grey nodules embedded in the soil. Rather than removing them, I separated and tested them on their own.

The material is rich in iron-bearing minerals, which play a key role in the transformation that occurs during firing. At high temperature, the nodules melted into a deep black surface with a soft satin sheen, revealing a completely different character from the clay surrounding them.

A material hidden underground for millions of years, briefly exposed during excavation, transformed into a surface that carries the memory of its origin.

This unique piece is the result of a material investigation into raw clay recovered from the Grossalbis construction site, situated at the base of the Uetliberg in Zurich.

The object serves as a tangible record of the local landscape and its hidden geological layers.
The clay deposits here are a legacy of the Linth Glacier.

The immense pressure and movement of the glacier grinding against the molasse bedrock facilitated the formation of these fine grained sediments.

The firing process reveals a pale cream finish, a direct consequence of the exceptionally low iron oxide concentration in this specific stratigraphic layer.

This piece transforms a temporary construction site into a permanent archive of Zurich’s subterranean history.

What happens when the hand becomes the bridge between the built environment and the raw sensitivity of matter?

This Milan Design Week, we invite you to HANDSCAPES.

The exhibition is a dialogue between three distinct paths that choose hand-making as a tool for territorial investigation. It is a resistance to industrial uniformity, where wool,
wood, and clay are not just materials, but vessels of memory.
From the tactile warmth of tufted landscapes and the structural honesty of local timber to the reclaimed earth from urban construction sites, each piece tells a story of transformation. Form emerges from a slow, conscious hand gesture that crystallizes the
physical origins of our surroundings.

Enriching this journey, our friend and photographer @gegalanello joins the exhibition with two photographs captured in the landscape of Umbria.

Join us to explore this intimate connection between human touch and the landscape.

This is how I turn excavated soil into ceramic.

The material comes directly from construction sites.
It is soil that would normally be transported away and forgotten.
I collect it as it is, without selecting it for color or purity.

Back in the studio I let it dry completely, then I break it down.
Once reduced to smaller fragments, I add water and wait.
I mix until the mass dissolves into a liquid clay slip.
At that point I sieve it to remove stones and larger particles.
What remains is the fraction that can be shaped.

The slip is poured onto plaster to slowly lose excess water.
When it reaches the right consistency, I wedge it thoroughly until the body becomes even and workable.
Every batch is slightly different because every site has a different composition.
I do not try to standardize it. I adjust to it.

The pieces are thrown and refined on the wheel.
They dry slowly and completely before the first firing at low temperature, which stabilizes the form.

After that I apply a transparent glaze.
It is not there to add color but to protect the surface and intensify the natural tone of the soil.

What you see in the end is not a color I chose. It is the actual earth from a specific place, processed, shaped and made durable. taken in Zürich, Switzerland by @archestudio.ch

A shelf in the studio filled with clays from different construction sites across Zürich.
Each container holds a fragments of the city, waiting to be tested, shaped, and given a new role.
What looks like simple storage is, in fact, the start of a material archive in progress.

This large vessel is finished with a glaze made from clay collected at the Borrweg site.
The glaze moves gently downward over the surface, following the form and leaving a subtle trace of its flow.
