Thanks for the many likes and follows! More from SL Weiss, I play this Gavotte in a bit of a "sturm und drang" style - pulling and pushing the dramatic presence of the music. But in the end, a gavotte has to rock! This piece is one of a pair, but to hear the both together in all their glory go to my YouTube channel: @archguitar.

I love playing in rooms with high ceilings, especially live. It invites spontaneous dynamics - making the lines disappear in softness, playing over the soundhole, and then repeating a phrase with bright color, when I pick down by the bridge.
The composer of this little "Saltarello" was often a guest in the Bach household, making music. One of the greatest lutenists ever, Weiss was a friend of the Bach's and his music, at its finest, makes me think some of that Bach mojo rubbed off on him. I'm sure whatever sweetness and lyricism Bach may have heard from Weiss's lute went into the Bach genius machine.
Music from around 1735. ❤️

When I play these 16th century lute dances, I think of them a bit more like a "traditional music" player. I know the tune well, as it's written, but I like to make my own little changes to it, and improvise them, in the moment. Pierre Attaingnant's "La Roque." Coolest name for a renaissance dance, I'd say.

Lots of questions coming my way lately:
"How's it tuned?"
"Why 11 strings?"
Etc.
... so here are a few answers ...
Next time, I'll answer why ... 😎

The thrill of playing this Bach courante has never diminished for me. It's a wild ride, and the challenge for me is to let myself discover the spontaneous feelings that the music generates (which is often different, since they're a combination of where I am at, and certain things that just emerge out of the piece). At the same time, you have to tiptoe your fingers through the strings, pretty fast.
I love it. Add an audience, and it's a deep challenge and a thrilling pleasure. by @archguitar

Born on this day - October 12, 1687:
Sylvius Leopold Weiss.
Happy Birthday, Maestro Sylvio!
His music brings out a tenderness and sweet, sighing feelings. In these preludes, the French called them "Entrée de luth" it takes patience and a embrace of delicate, near silence between the phrases, giving human breath to the music.
