Can a 90-Year-Old Vase Capture the Personality of a City? Few objects in modern design have achieved the strange status of Alvar Aalto’s vase. It is simultaneously a piece of tableware, a sculpture, a souvenir of Finnish modernism, and one of those rare objects recognizable almost entirely by silhouette.
Ninety years after its creation, that silhouette is being asked to do something new: become a city.

To mark the vase’s 90th anniversary, @iittala has created the Aalto 90 City Vase Collection, a limited-edition series inspired by six cities with particularly strong design identities. Each takes Aalto’s familiar undulating form and gives it a different color and character intended to evoke its namesake metropolis.

Home wellness is often treated as an amenity. The bigger opportunity is designing it into every room.

Natural light, quieter interiors, clean air, calming materials, and stronger connections to the outdoors can help a home feel restorative without relying on a dedicated wellness space.

Sometimes the most meaningful design move is also the simplest: an operable window, a clear view of greenery, or a transition that makes the outdoors feel like part of the living space.

Architects need detailed project data, but they also need a clear view of everything around the project.

When design information, environmental conditions, infrastructure, and community priorities sit in separate systems, teams can miss important connections.

GIS creates a shared spatial view that helps architects understand how a project relates to its neighborhood, city, and environment. The goal is not more data. It is information that works together.

A polished rendering can show what a design looks like. But can it help architects decide what the design should become?

Real-time visualization lets teams move through a project, test new viewpoints, adjust lighting and atmosphere, and explore how the design relates to its surroundings without relying on a fixed set of images.

Visualization is becoming part of the creative process, not just the final presentation.

A distinctive façade can create maintenance concerns before it creates design excitement. Natural slate offers architects a way to pursue both visual character and long-term resilience.

It does not require painting, sealing, or routine weatherization. It is also described as non-combustible, impact-resistant, and seismic-resistant. The result is a natural exterior with texture and depth, without adding an extensive maintenance schedule.

Architects are constantly asked to balance appearance, durability, maintenance, sustainability, and budget. The problem is that some material decisions are still influenced by outdated perceptions.

Modern vinyl products now offer deeper profiles, more realistic textures, broader finish options, moisture resistance, weatherability, and low-maintenance performance. Third-party verification can also give project teams clearer information when assessing sustainability progress and supplier performance.

A material should be judged by its current performance data, not its former reputation.

📉 ARCHITECTURE’S LONGEST SLUMP IS GETTING EVEN LONGER.

Nearly 3½ years.

That’s how long architecture firms have been dealing with soft business conditions—the longest downturn in the history of the AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index.

And July didn’t bring the recovery firms have been waiting for.

🏗️ ABI: 46.6
👀 Project inquiries: 52.6
📝 Design contracts: 47.2

The numbers tell a strange story.

Clients still want to build.

They’re asking architects about new projects. They’re exploring possibilities. They’re keeping the pipeline alive.

But too few of those conversations are becoming signed contracts.

And the weakness is everywhere:

📍 South: 48.7
📍 West: 47.8
📍 Midwest: 46.7
📍 Northeast: 44.8

Every major sector is contracting too.

🏠 Multifamily: 48.4
🏛️ Institutional: 47.4
🏢 Commercial/industrial: 46.7
📐 Mixed practice: 43.2

Perhaps most striking of all: Commercial and industrial architecture firms haven’t reported billings growth in four years.

So what’s going on?

High borrowing costs, inflation concerns, expensive construction, and economic uncertainty are making projects increasingly difficult to finance.

The pipeline isn’t empty.

It’s clogged.

There are still projects people want to build. The problem is an economy that keeps making them harder to build.
