I’ve never met architects who learned to practise outside the mainstream. We just started, failed and learned how to succeed next time.

Over 15 years running Architecture-in-Development, I’ve watched practitioners who left, while others persevered.

It’s rarely about design talent. It’s whether they had people around them… or whether they were figuring it out alone.

“AI cannot walk into a village and build trust.”  “Secure relations before securing funding.”  “Is our network the right network?”  “Outside looks shiny. Look inside.”

These are the hard-earned insights and lessons of practitioners building outside the mainstream. A reminder for those on this path.

Want to be a better architect? Get out of your bubble. Breaking out of our comfort zones allows us to empathize and design more collaboratively with people from different backgrounds, overall making us better practitioners.

Architect Jan Glasmeier urges designers to explore the world and learn about what's happening outside our familiar environments. The architecture industry does not always provide us the opportunity to engage with important issues in different contexts, so we sometimes need to be the ones to step out on our own journeys towards a better understanding.

When architects design, are they considering how people can feel proud of their space? Community ownership is a key part of do-it-together architecture, and yet the industry generally neglects this aspect. We learn a lot about making monuments, but not about what they mean to the people who maintain them.

As designers, how do we leave space for builders and end users to creatively leave their own mark on the places they inhabit? How can we prioritize ownership in our approach to development? by @architectureindevelopment

"Every presentation is a small magazine about the architecture" mentorship circle participant Ismail El Kasmi reflects on his experience in the architecture field. We need to focus more on the partners of a project when we communicate about it - not just the architecture. The industry does not always teach us to communicate to non-architects, but that is who we are addressing a lot of the time.

"You cannot fake it - you really need to love it." In the architecture world, it can be challenging to find satisfaction. But when different practitioners from different backgrounds meet, they generate an energy that you don't see in a typical office environment.

Architecture school doesn't teach us how to learn from people working in other cultures and environments. That's why it is crucial to seek out opportunities to connect across borders and open our worldviews to the possibilities. You may even find your creativity and motivation coming back. by @architectureindevelopment

"The building becomes part of everyone's lives." Why are community architects important in the field?

Architects who work together with local communities are not only there to coordinate safe construction, but they catalyze impact through empathy and listening as demonstrated in the work of one of our long-time member architects Uday Goswami in India. Do-it-together architects filter and translate local strengths and needs, leading to more ownership of spaces. Do you think buildings can integrate into people's lives?

We are designing for the 1% of society but what about the other 99%? The vast majority of humanity does not have access to quality, safe and dignifying architecture - most often because of the cost. But the good news is that there are indeed some professionals who elect to design in partnership with the majority! The problem is, those who choose the 99% are left behind without proper support in the commercial design world.

What would happen if the architecture industry began rewarding social impact?

in the A--D mentoring circle, Architect and urbanist Renato Cymbalista shares about the downfalls of the design industry. He calls for a mindset shift: from asking for money to offering participation as a way to engage stakeholders on a deeper level.

Architecture is meant to be a creative industry, and yet it leaves professionals feeling depleted. In an interview with Let's Talk Design, A--D founder Changfang shares her experience with burnout within the architecture field.

In the midst of this exhaustion, inspiration emerged in the form of an innovative local design effort overseas - and that was just the beginning.
