POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
i have no desire to become a quadtruple amputee but freight (or train) hopping looks cool as fuck. the only hopping on transport i’ve done was tram hopping (not paying for a ticket.) when i was younger (why am i acting like i’m geriatric?) i’d have these wild fantasies of adventure. but i’m not brave enough to go out on my own. and i’m not stupid enough to go train hopping. but something like camping! i’d love to go camping one day. or just travel around the uk with a caravan (i can’t drive) OR id love to go to the american midwest. mhmmmm. so many things i want to do but i don’t have the funds or the people or the bravery. maybe one day. i need to stop living my life vicariously through people on the internet… i think my sedentary lifestyle calls me to romanticise the transient one.

i wanted to make this page borderline educational with sources which weren’t from wikipedia. i started reading a book about runaway teenagers and hobo culture during the great depression. hopping trains was their mode of transportation as they looked for work. i couldn’t read the whole book bcos google books is my enemy but what i’ve learnt is that i’m never complaining about my life again gee whizz…

dead man’s bones was a duo consisting of ryan gosling and zach shields accompanied by silverlake conservatory children’s choir. ā€œ[they spun] fireside ghost stories into mesmerising ā€˜monster mash’ sing-alongs.ā€* gosling and shields played all the instruments during the recording, and they limited themselves with three takes, ā€œletting any imperfections highlight the strengths of the music.ā€**

the first songs i found by them was were ā€˜flowers grow out of my grave’. it elicits such nice memories of an old internet friend. we jokingly got married online (it was lockdown), we had a pinterest board dedicated to our wedding, she sent me a wedding book in the post, i sent her a wedding ring in the post, and i made her a playlist. ā€˜flowers grow out of my grave’ was on that playlist.

my biggest regret is finding a dead man’s bones cd on ebay and not buying it. it is now it’s nowhere to be found. pls will someone let me buy this cd for a reasonable price. my desperation has driven me to email the record label. and zach shields. their best song isn’t even on the album! it only exists on youtube :’(

another niche ryan gosling project i have consumed was this film called ā€˜lost river’. i only watched it bcos it had my fave actor in (iain de caestecker). i have now learnt to not have favourite actors bcos this fella kept on cancelling his comic con appearances and when i finally gave up on the chance of meeting him, that was when he turned up. i’m never going to be caught lacking ever again. no more favourite actors from me!

but anyway lost river. the film isn’t the best. but it has some really gorgeous shots. and ā€˜yes (love theme from lost river)’ was my SONG OF THE SUMMER a few years back. it also has saoirse ronan in. and matt smith. it’s a good film if you squint. it had potential.

i want to be a polymath. unfortunately that involves reading books. i am SO MAD at myself because years back i got OVERWHELMED with all the books i wanted to read. so then i just stopped reading. i read fanfiction (i know) BUT I WILL DEFEND IT TO MY LAST DYING BREATH bcos there is GOOD SHIT out there. i also like to read thoroughly for all my essays. but other than that my brain just rejects the written form. well on paper at least. maybe i should invest in a kindle. i was in waterstones the other day and i was SO SAD because there was so many books i wanted to read.

my bookshelf is split into five themes: religion, neurology, psychiatry, miscellaneous non-fiction, and general fiction. this will be the year i read all my books. also on my bookshelf are my cds (in alphabetical order naturally) and my dvds (split into tv and films and then alphabetically). i will also watch all the films on my shelf this year too pls pls pls. except the blu rays :’( my two favourite films in the whole world are UNWATCHABLE bcos my dvd player can’t take the format.

anyway i found a list in my notes app of things i want to have knowledge in:

ologys:
theology
neurology
horology
sociology
psychology
geology

non-ologys:
psychiatry
linguistics

what else should i add to my list? i shall be on my polymath grind this academic year. (i always become victim of these flights of fancy and end up wasting my time just lying in bed.)

lowkey i should be focusing on my dissertation. i have vague ideas that i need to refine. the head of the school told me that my ideas are very difficult (hooray 0_o) (i’m hoping if i do well on a difficult topic it would be extra cool). my tourette’s therapist called it ā€˜woke’. is it woke or am i just considering the non gendered nature of (the abrahamic) god and the language constraints of religious texts?

i don’t like euphemisms for death and dying. my only exception to this statement is the phrase ā€˜popped their clogs.’ i have a playlist titled ā€˜if i pop my clogs’ because i am worried that if i die prematurely, there will be shit songs at my funeral. i plan for my funeral to be a listening experience. ā€˜sleep’ by godspeed you! black emperor will be playing. all 23 minutes. and johnny cash’s cover of amazing grace bcos it BANGS even though i don’t believe in god. i like the concept of the song. i also told my sister to invite the niche bands i like to play at my funeral. and that i want to be buried in my glasses because if there is an afterlife i’m worried that i won’t be able to see. and also i do NOT want to be cremated. i watched really scary doctor who episode…

maybe i think about dying too much. i’m perfectly healthy. my therapist once asked me if i had health anxiety. i told her i have health KNOWLEDGE. i have sent two separate people to hospital because of Suspicious Symptoms and i was CORRECT in being worried. one had an infection going to their blood and another had svt.

ā€˜practical first aid’ was my favourite book as a child. i was really into bandages at one point. 11 year old me was really into bbc casualty. in sixth form, my report mentioned my love for the nhs website. god forbid a girl is curious! i wanted a dsm 5 for christmas that year but i couldn’t find any cheap :’( lowkey if i had all the time and money in the world i’d love to do a medical degree. but chemistry actually disgusts me and i want to skip all the boring bits and go straight onto neurology. or psychiatry. but i also could not have the life of a person in my hands. absolutely not. shoutout to all the medical workers out there!

i was talking about miss peregrine’s home for peculiar children with my sister. i’m not a super fan of the books and film or anything. i just have a recurring dream of visiting miss peregrine (although it is devolving) (this is the only mothering i get and i’m missing it). my sister asked me what peculiarity i would have. i said that i would like to be an ymbryne because i would like to look after children and turn into a bird and also make a time loop. then my sister asked me what bird i would like to be. i said i would like to be a robin or a raven. she told me that if i was a bird i’d be a pigeon. but one of those pigeons that get hair and string tied in their feet and they’re just hobbling everywhere. thanks.

i felt kind of maternal over pigeons the other day. although i feel maternal over quite a lot of things. mainly babies though. and ugly toys. my sister laughs at me when i stop and wave and smile at all the babies i see. i can’t help it! they’re so cute! and you gotta compliment the babies bcos i bet the mothers are going Through It.

anyway i think i’m here to talk about pigeons. i feel like one of those pigeons that b. f. skinner made ritualistic. but that is complicated to explain. also my sister said that no one wants to hear about my dreams. and it is in reference to my dreams. i also feel sad about all the homing pigeons used in ww1. feral pigeons are derived from the domestic population :(. did you know that a pigeon was awarded a croix de guerre (war cross) for carrying 12 messages while injured? i remember watching a horrible histories sketch on that.

i might invest in a homing pigeon. my new flat has no signal so my main method of communication is via email. or standing in the car park to call people (my sister). it’s either getting a homing pigeon or making smoke signals. maybe i should learn morse code. that might be less of a health hazard.

the pieta: ā€œan artistic representation of [mary] lamenting over the dead body of christ, which she holds on her knees. of 13th century german origin, this image is associated with devotion to the sufferings of [mary] during the passion of christā€ - the oxford dictionary of the christian church

i really enjoyed looking for photos for this post. at first i looked for mothers and children, but i thought what with the state of the internet these days, maybe i shouldn’t post those. but seeing mothers and children of all shapes and sizes and seeing LOVE in the eyes made me happy. i’m trying to convince myself that people do love their children.

i remember some guy was trying to convince me on the existence of god and he was trying the argument ā€˜there’s things you can’t see but you know they exist! therefore god exists!’ unfortunately he asked me ā€˜do you believe in love?’ and i said no. that threw him. i want to believe in love! i love my sister. i know i love her because i will die for her and i will kill for her. i love children because they are all so precious and small and the world is a scary place and they need love. (i want kids sooooo bad). but romantic love? this is where i think the world is in on own big joke.

anyway i’m supposed to be talking about the pieta here. surprisingly it’s not my favourite depiction of mary. i LOVE mater delorosa (our lady of sorrows) she is depicted with seven stakes peircing her heart. dolores is such a banging name. idk why anyone would call their child sorrow/ pain though… not with nominative determinism and that.

i did an essay on mary once. it was on a song, ā€˜ave maria’ - but not the one you all know. i emailed the band who wrote it! i’ve written another essay on mary but i argued that the virginal conception was a construction of the early church. so less wholesome.

a desire path is an unplanned trail in a natural area caused by erosion resulting from human and/or animal traffic. it usually represents the route of most ease. some landscapers have taken advantage of these desire paths and paved them with asphalt to reduce the amount of dirt being tracked into buildings.* (final picture)

there’s a small desire path on my way to uni. since it’s been the summer and no one’s been around trampling on it, shoots of grass have started to peek out. the indomitable (poeceae) spirt amirite! especially after that heatwave!

according to poorly cited articles i read, ā€œdesire pathā€ was a term coined by french philosopher gaston bachelard. however i like a primary source, so i tried to find this idea in the book that it supposedly exists in. it was not there. this poor guy in a comment section in 2010 also had the same predicament as me. he could not find the quote. i hope he’s found peace.

i then got really into trying to find the origins of the phrase. i started reading a 1959 survey on transportation in chicago! they often referred to desire lines in reference to vehicles and transportation: ā€œthe desire line in the shortest line between origin and destination, and expresses the way a person would like to go, if such way were available.ā€** i believe they used this information for future city planning.

i hope i’m not boring you guys… i tried to read a highway research manual from 1949 but i got a bit nauseous and the p values. i drew the line at reading an article titled ā€œhow dry is dry soil?ā€ there were almost 200 pages just discussing soil!
