Do Robots Dream of Construction Sites?
09.09-05.12.2026

Opening Tuesday 8 September

What if robots didn’t replace us, but worked alongside us? Robots are capable of assembling, analysing, experimenting and learning from their mistakes. Could they take on construction work without replacing human labour?

Research carried out by the CRCL – Lab for Creative Computation at EPFL explores forms of collaboration between humans and machines that departs from the traditional promise of automation. It opens the way to more inclusive building sites and non-standardised, more environmentally friendly architecture that goes beyond the mere logic of replacement and productivity.

An exhibition produced in collaboration with the CRCL – Lab for Creative Computation, led by Stefana Parascho

NEW PODCAST! N°28 – Stefana Parascho šŸ¤–šŸ—ļø

Stefana Parascho is a researcher and architect, director of the CRCL–Lab for Creative Computation at EPFL. Her work lies at the intersection of architecture, robotics, and computational design. She adresses a central question: What if robots didn’t replace us, but worked alongside us? Can robotic processes evolve into genuinely collaborative practices that enhance the experience of construction work?

Only a few weeks left to visit the exhibition « From the Cèdres to Dorigny, building the Architecture School » at Archizoom!

Join us for a guided tour on Tuesday 22 September at 5:30 p.m., followed by an EPFL School Lecture by Elli Mosayebi of EMI Architek*innen.

About the exhibition
Focusing on architectural projects, kept in the Archives of modern construction, the exhibition Des Cèdres à Dorigny tells the story of the creation and evolution of the Lausanne School of Architecture. From its beginnings within the EPUL to its integration into the EPFL campus, this historical journey puts into perspective the conditions of architectural education, its relationship with engineering, and the role of archives in building an institutional memory.

SCHOOL LECTURE 1/6
Tuesday, September 8, Foyer SG, 18:15

LEARNING VOL.1

STEFANA PARASCHO + AUDE BILLARD
Do Robots Dream of Construction Sites?

What if robots didn’t replace people, but worked alongside us to conceive, plan and build architecture? While digitalisation is reshaping the built environment, most efforts have centered on automation and substitution, with little real impact on how we design or build. The talk argues that adaptability - not automation - is the key to sustainable architectural and construction impact. It highlights autonomous systems that adjust structural and spatial strategies in real time, and human-robot interaction models that keep human judgment central.

Stefana Parascho is an architect, researcher, and educator exploring the intersection of architecture, robotics, and computational design. She is an Assistant Professor at EPFL and head of the Lab for Creative Computation. Her work focuses on human-robot collaboration, robotic construction, and accessible digital tools. She holds a PhD from ETH Zurich and taught at Princeton University.

Aude Billard is a full professor and head of the LASA laboratory at EPFL, and a pioneer in machine learning and human-robot interaction. She is President-elect of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society and an IEEE Fellow, with numerous prestigious awards including the Intel Teaching Award and IEEE RAS Distinguished Award.
