October 17 - The Feast of St. Ignatius of Antioch
.
The Feast of Saint Ignatius of Antioch is primarily celebrated on October 17 in Western Christianity, including the Catholic Church, the Church of England, and Lutheran Churches. An Apostolic Father, disciple of Saint John, and the third bishop of Antioch, Ignatius was martyred in Rome around 107–110 AD by being thrown to wild beasts.

📅 Calendar Variations

While October 17 is the most prominent date globally, different Christian traditions celebrate his feast day at various times of the year:
• Western Christianity (Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran): October 17. Prior to the liturgical reforms of 1969, the General Roman Calendar celebrated his feast on February 1.
• Eastern Orthodox Church: December 20.
• Coptic Christianity: 24 Koiak (commemorating his martyrdom, which typically falls on January 2) and 7 Epip (commemorating the translation of his relics).

🦁 Significance & Legacy

The feast honours one of early Christianity's most courageous figures. Ignatius is uniquely remembered for several foundational contributions:
• The "Catholic" Church: He is the first recorded writer in history to use the Greek term Katholike Ekklesia ("Catholic Church") to describe the universal body of believers.
• The Seven Epistles: While being transported under military guard from Syria to Rome, he wrote seven historic letters to early Christian communities. These letters provide an invaluable window into the theology, structure, and sacramental life of the 2nd-century Church.
• Theology of the Eucharist: He fiercely defended the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, famously writing en route to his execution: "I am the wheat of the Lord; may I be ground by the teeth of the beasts to become the immaculate bread of Christ."
• Patronage: He is venerated as the patron saint of the church in North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean, and those suffering from throat diseases.

முன்பே பதிவு செய்தவர்களும், இனி பங்கேற்க விருப்பமுள்ளவர்களும் குறிப்பிட்ட நேரத்தில் பள்ளிக்கு வந்து சேருமாறு கேட்டுக்கொள்ளப்படுகிறார்கள்.
