POP UP: EXHIBITION
FRIDAY | 09.10.26 | 11AM
HEIZKRAFTWERK

Arch & Krach is an independent platform for architecture (Arch) and the noise (Krach) around it. At their pop-up exhibition at AJA, they will focus on the process behind a design.

Bring your sketches, working models, ideas, images, research, texts, plans or fragments (finished or unfinished). Bring them physically or simply as images on your phone. We will gather them and exhibit them together.

At 4 PM, we’ll come together to look at what we’ve created and have a drink. by @archundkrach

My family’s agricultural farmstead in Mroków, Poland, forms the starting point of this work. Developed over decades through a process of bricolage, shaped by improvised additions and pragmatic reuse, it appears today less as a finished work than as a living material archive. Drawing on the thesis of New Materialism, the work understands matter as an active participant in the design process. Five resonances are developed that shape the continued transformation of the existing fabric: iteration, interconnection, resource gathering, care, and aesthetic impulses.

With the transformation of the old farmhouse acting as a catalyst, an open-ended process emerges, accompanying the transformation of the farmstead iteratively through four acts. Materials are gathered, brought into new relationships, and influence the process through their own agency. The farmstead thus becomes a laboratory for a culture of transformation, that recognizes matter as an active force and opens up new forms of resonance between people, materials, and context.

arch_archive-of-the-ordinary

This project challenges the idea of an archive as a sealed container of curated objects, proposing instead that the archive already exists within everyday life—in what we store, forget, and accumulate. In Gowanus, self-storage facilities like CubeSmart quietly hold personal belongings, while a network of artists connected through Arts Gowanus produces a continuous flow of paintings, sculptures, and works in progress. Yet storage and production remain disconnected.

This project merges the two by reimagining self-storage as a collective archive and artist workspace—a hybrid building where belongings and artworks blur, and artists work directly within the archive. Organized as uniquely shaped rooms meeting at points of tangency, the building creates moments where programs collide, producing a museum-like experience—both storage and exhibition, where objects remain in flux and making is visible, even ceremonial.

I created massing studies and sectional models to explore how each program could evolve and how best to position them. The project began as a rigid grid and evolved into differently shaped rooms at specific angles, creating voids within the plan—opportunities for light, greenery, and spatial connection.

The model combines foam core, 3D-printed walls, mesh, and layered paper cladding, including Bristol, colored, and handmade paper. Blue paper on the first floor represents exposed insulation; gray paper in the studios highlights distinct spatial and material qualities.

Pauline Ludwig

The Reeperbahn never stands still: a kilometre of light, signage and thresholds, framed between two high-rises and covered in a skin that tarnishes and rebuilds itself. Up close, it breaks apart into entrances, machines and signals. Behind this surface lies another order: the street’s image depends on cleaning, delivery and repair. It is maintained, not simply switched on and off. The project begins with this dependency between spectacle and support.

Along the strip, portals, signs and service objects draw attention while fulfilling ordinary tasks, embedded in the street yet still acting as figures. A first intervention tests this: a silo for winter service, an infrastructural object that is also a sign, belonging both to the city’s machinery and to the Reeperbahn’s visual world.
This logic carries into a vacant structure behind the strip, once a cinema, later a casino with a bowling alley below. The proposal inserts two programs: a depot for street-cleaning vehicles below, and above it a new home for the Imperial Theatre. Openings between them make the coexistence of culture and maintenance tangible.

A new stage tower rises behind the illuminated front, giving form to the hidden depth of the block. Vehicles leave in the morning, the bar empties, the auditorium is cleaned after the performance. Cleaning, storage, theatre, waiting, delivery and performance become one architectural rhythm. Infrastructure is not placed behind the urban scenery — it becomes part of it.

Through shifts in renewable energy demand and production, the wax battery breathes with the seasonal cycle—melting and hardening while storing energy and releasing heat. Residents sense the core’s charge level through its warmth and changing consistency. The warm core shapes the building’s climate: radiating heat in winter, acting as a heat chimney in summer to drive airflow and cooling. More than a utility, it functions almost as a living element that adapts the building through seasonal expansion. This expansion shifts interior walls to enable summer airflow and orient living spaces toward the façade; in winter, it creates buffer zones and reorients flats toward the warm core. A 1:25 scale model illustrates this movement.
For centuries, people lived in harmony with nature’s rhythms, using resources sustainably. This changed with the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the modern energy industry—we must find our way back. Many renewable sources follow natural cycles, inevitably demanding a more energy-conscious mindset. Humanity’s survival owes much to our ancestors‘ harmony with Earth’s cycles.
The project began with a prototyping exercise testing the chosen material’s properties, resulting in a pretzel warmer that stores heat and releases it at a constant rate for six hours.
Most sketches are diagrammatic—tools for illustrating and communicating ideas rather than primary design instruments. The colored wax crayon was chosen deliberately: it’s made of the same material central to our energy storage concept, and its imprecision reflects the tension between technical precision and the naive courage to realize a bold idea.

Professors: Anna MacIver-Ek and Axel Chevroulet.
