Recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day (2/2)

Beyond Acknowledgement: Our Continuing Responsibility

A land acknowledgement is an important expression of respect, but its meaning is strengthened by the actions that follow.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day reminds us that Tribal Nations are not peoples of the past. They are living, sovereign communities whose histories, cultural traditions, languages, knowledge systems, and leadership continue to shape our region and enrich our collective future.

As an institution of higher education, American River College recognizes the importance of fostering meaningful, reciprocal relationships with Tribal Nations, supporting the educational success and cultural identities of Native American students, and creating opportunities for Indigenous perspectives and knowledge to be respected and represented throughout our college community.

We invite our students, faculty, staff, and community members to observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day through learning, reflection, respectful engagement, and a renewed commitment to honoring Tribal sovereignty and supporting Native peoples, not only on October 12, but throughout the year.

To learn more about Native American student resources, programs, and opportunities for engagement, please visit American River College’s Native American Resource Center https://bit.ly/42yvmnG by @arcnewstoday

Recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day (1/2)

On Monday, October 12, American River College joins communities across the nation in observing Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a time to honor the rich histories, cultures, knowledge, and enduring contributions of Indigenous peoples, while recognizing the continued presence and sovereignty of Tribal Nations.

Our college campuses are situated within the ancestral homelands of the Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok peoples, whose relationships with these lands extend back to time immemorial. These relationships are not simply part of California's history; they remain living expressions of cultural identity, responsibility, and connection to place.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day invites us to reflect not only on the historical injustices experienced by Native peoples, including colonization, displacement, and genocide, but also on their continued strength, leadership, cultural knowledge, and determination to protect their identities, communities, and sovereign rights.

American River College is honored to share its official Land Acknowledgement Statement, developed in consultation with local Tribes, as an expression of respect for the original peoples of this region and their descendants.

American River College Land Acknowledgement Statement

We acknowledge the land which we occupy at American River College as the traditional home of the Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok tribal nations. These sovereign people have been the caretakers of this land since time immemorial. Despite centuries of genocide and occupation the Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok continue as vibrant and resilient tribes and bands, both Federally recognized and unrecognized. We take this opportunity to acknowledge the generations that have gone before as well as the present-day Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok people. by @arcnewstoday
