An orca calf's transition from an exclusive milk diet to hunting and consuming solid food is a gradual, multi-year developmental process. During the first few months, the calf relies entirely on its mother's milk, which is exceptionally rich in fat and provides primary nutrition early on, but social learning and prey-sharing within the pod drive the shift toward solid foods.

Newborn orcas (like this one) often have visible vertical creases called 'fetal folds'. These form as they develop folded in half inside their mother's uterus to accommodate their large size. Once born, the skin gradually stretches out, and the lines fade completely within a few weeks to months as the calf grows and accumulates subcutaneous blubber.

A common misconception with orcas is that collapsed dorsal fins are not found in the wild (only captive orcas). In fact, this is not the case and we have a few individuals in Norway with either partially or fully collapsed fins. Apart from the fin, these animals are usually healthy and fully functional members of their pods.

Shown here is an orca we have been seeing for many years (NKW-063) moving around the outside of a herring baitball during a carousel feeding event.

The most accepted theory for the cause of this phenomenon is linked to pressure and its effect on the collagen which is essential for the structure (rigidity) of their dorsal fin. Not being able (or needing) to dive deep can eventually weaken this dense fibrous protein tissue resulting in it collapsing over time.

Another prime example of healthy males in the wild with collapsed dorsal fins are 'port' and 'starboard' who are two famous orcs often seen around the shallower waters on the Western Cape in South Africa.

🐟This post will not get many 'likes', but what many people do not realise is that without the herring, the amazing encounters we are fortunate to experience each season (orcas, humpbacks , fin whales and more) would not be possible.

Coming to Norway is about so much more than just 'seeing a whale' and understanding the bigger picture and why / how this amazing migration happens is a key part to appreciating it all.
