Many of the characteristics of dyspraxia are in the diagnostic criteria for autism and/or ADHD.

Many of the students I’ve advised through the years and whom I know are diagnosed or self-Id as ADHDers have “poor” handwriting (so do I unless I focus on writing nicely). Problems with time management, planning and organization, with short term memory, bumping into people, and many other issues are fairly common too.

Rest is crucial for learning, and letting your mind wander during periods of rest improves your focus at times when it’s needed.

To be alert in class or your office, decrease the information you feed your brain while you walk, drive. Give your brain a real break.

Looking at the fall colors is a good way to rest!

@rackeragency is a non-profit that supports people with disabilities, founded in 1948. They have supported my family and many others through a rich and vast variety of supports, services and resources. They have made a strong, positive and invaluable impact on the community as a whole.

Cristine Donovan, Racker's Executive Director, kindly accepted to review my book, and after reading it, endorsed it. Her endorsement reads:

“The Complete College Skills Guide for Neurodivergent Students is a wealth of information for students and for those who support them. The guide is clear and helpful and reinforces a holistic approach to learning and success, including the importance of sleep, fun, and belonging.”

Teach Yourself How To Learn and Teach Students How To Learn are two influential and impactful books to understand learning and obtain valuable ideas of how to craft a course, for faculty, or how to learn any topic in a more efficient way, for students.

Both were written by Dr. Saundra McGuire. Dr. McGuire taught at Cornell and then at Louisiana State University. I got acquainted with her work after a lecture she gave at Cornell, and we used her books as textbooks for the classes I teach on learning skills.

A bit over a year ago, she came to campus and was happily able and willing to give a talk to my students. She was instrumental in me being able to publish my book, from encouraging me to getting me in touch with the editors at Routledge Books, and reviewing one of the chapters of the book. On top of all that, she was kind enough to read the book, assess it, and endorse it.

Dr. Saundra McGuire's endorsement reads:

“Ardon has combined decades of teaching neurodivergent students effective learning strategies with a broad knowledge of the research to produce an extraordinary book that helps ND students navigate the college environment and advocate for themselves. It’s a must read for all ND students.”

Lauren Hough Williams, who leads the Program for Inclusion and Neurodiversity Education is someone I admire. She is unique--warm and supportive yet a fierce advocate for neurodivergent students, K-12 and beyond.

I've attended several of her programs and had the fortune to be in a panel where she was also a panelist. And I was beyond thrilled that she accepted to read my book and endorse it if the felt it was a good resource for students.

Lauren's endorsement reads:
“Grounded in evidence yet deeply accessible, this research-rich guide empowers neurodivergent learners to understand how they learn and advocate for what they need to thrive. Clear, affirming, and practical, it is essential reading for students entering college and the educators and families who support them.”

As society, we have advanced considerably, but are not yet there. It seems like we're in the two step forward - one step back stage. This post, which I wrote in 2014, is still relevant today.

The endorsement for my book that I cherish the most was written by a college student, Jasmine Mueller, who is studying at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. Normally, this type of endorsements are professionals and experts. But the book is for college students (and others taking university-level courses), so I wanted a student to review it.

I wanted this book to be one that not only provided students with evidence-based information about learning, but also empowered them to take ownership of their college career and advocate for their needs. Jasmine was one of the best test readers ever! She gave me a lot of ideas on how to improve the book, what information to add, what didn't sound right, and much more.

Jasmine's endorsement reads:
"This book feels like a warm hug from a supportive friend during the most stressful hours of college madness"
