Āre visited Northern Norway – the Lofoten Islands - and noticed this beautiful traditional building technique at Kabelvåg Feriehus & Camping.

In traditional Norwegian cabins (hytter), the roof is often built using centuries-old knowledge and natural local materials. One of the most important elements is birch bark, called “bjørkenever” - often simply “never”. It was laid in overlapping layers as a natural waterproof membrane - long before modern roofing materials existed.

On top of this, builders placed torv (turf/grass), creating the iconic “torvtak” (turf roof). The bark protected the wooden structure from moisture, while the turf added insulation and weight to keep everything in place.

Beuatiful example of Scandinavian vernacular architecture - simple, sustainable, and incredibly effective.

Similar birch bark roofing techniques can be found across Nordic, Baltic and other Northern regions, including Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Finland and nothern parts of Russia, where local materials shaped traditional vernacular architecture.

-āre- visited Yana Rumi in Chazuta, Perú. 🌿
There’s something very special about stepping into Yana Rumi workshop in Chazuta. From the moment you walk in, you’re welcomed into a home of passionate artisans who pour their hearts into every piece they create. I had the pleasure to visit and learn from the master herself, Consolación Panaijo de Rios, who is known for safe-guarding the local traditional culture and is also known as the master of traditional Chazuta ceramics. It was such a wonderful experience to see the care and love that goes into each piece. Even though me and friend @lucila.kenny we passed by the studio when it was closed, on my very first visit to Chazuta, we were still warmly welcomed to observe the studio space by Consolación Panaijo herself. She sat down with us at a workshop table and began creating a piece right in front of us, using her special technique and local tools. Ceramic’s master talked about each step of creating the piece, tools used, meaning and about life itself. I felt like I am visiting an old friend or even a close relative.
After a short spontaneous pottery workshop, we were about to enter the craft store but doors of it got locked. But after a short moment, the family quickly gathered. It was so wonderful to see how the whole family showed their respect for this incredible woman who have done so much for preserving local culture. The grandson managed to open the door and we went inside to appreciate all the beautiful ceramics in the shop. She showed us her own masterpieces as well as those created by her daughters and grandson.
If you ever visit San Martin region, we truly advice you to visit Yana Rumi community (@yanarumichazuta ), for a workshop, to learn, to hear or just to feel and appreciate the beauty of local culture and meet the amazing people preserving it, it is an experience you will not forget.

Āre visited an exhibition at the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum that offers a glimpse into Latvia’s deep-rooted fishing traditions, which stretch back to the Stone Age (10,500-1,800 BC). With the country’s abundant natural resources - 494 kilometers of coastline, over 12,500 rivers, and 2,200 lakes - Latvia has long relied on freshwater fishing as a way of life while living in harmony with nature and it’s cycles. These methods, developed over centuries, prioritize ecological balance, respect for natural cycles and ecosystems, have minimal environmental impact - they focus on small-scale, seasonal, and selective harvesting, use low-tech tools, and are guided by cultural practices that protect fish populations.

The display features 468 authentic objects. These artifacts, combined with insightful narratives, reflect how fishing was not only a necessity but a central part of rural Latvian culture. Rivers like the Venta, Daugava, and Gauja, once renowned for their salmon and eel populations, are highlighted as key fishing grounds for centuries.

This exhibition showcasing wonderful artefacts, documentaries and magnificent interactive VR, offers to experience the close bond between nature and the daily lives of Latvians, emphasizing the cultural significance of fishing in the country’s history.

Exhibition is open till March 2, 2025, at @brivdabasmuzejs from 10:00 - 16:00.

- āre - visited wonderful natural paper making studio in Chazuta, Peru and truly invites you to visit if you ever happen to be around there!

The natural paper studio in Chazuta, Peru, invites visitors to experience the traditional craft of making paper from local Amazonian plants like banana, coconut, and Caapi. Participants learn to harvest natural fibers, process them through soaking and pulping, and create their own handmade paper. The workshop emphasizes sustainability and the importance of preserving the region’s unique plant life and ecosystems, while also showcasing the cultural heritage of the local indigenous communities. Whether you participate in workshop, observe or simply visit to learn about and purchase these beautiful papers, it’s a unforgettable way to connect with the environment and traditional craftsmanship in the heart of the Peruvian rainforest. And once you’ve mastered the art of paper-making, you can experiment with organic materials sourced from your local environment.

- āre - hand-dyed wool with plants has a long history in Latvia, dating back to ancient times. The practice is deeply rooted in Latvian folk traditions, where natural dyeing was an essential part of textile production, especially for creating woolen garments, tapestries, and linens. The use of plants for dyeing in Latvia is closely tied to the wider Baltic region’s traditions, where people relied on local, accessible plants for everything from clothing to ritual textiles. While exact dates are difficult to pinpoint, the first surviving archeological evidence of use of textile and dyes has been found from the Iron Age, when early Latvians, Baltic tribes, were weaving their textiles. Through all centuries local plants like nettles, onions, birch tree leaves, woad and more, where widely used to dye fabric for traditional clothings and more.

In the 20th century, as synthetic dyes became more common, traditional plant-based dyeing declined, but in recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in natural dyeing as part of the broader movement towards sustainability and traditional craft use in Latvia and the wider Baltic region. Today, many artisans and craft enthusiasts in Latvia continue to practice plant-based wool dyeing, both as a way to preserve cultural heritage and as a sustainable craft. by @are.studija
