A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The story follows four friends; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; Willem, an actor; and Jude, a lawyer — as they grow up and build their lives in New York. Divided into seven parts, it starts as a story about all four of them but slowly becomes much more centred around Jude and his past.

Jude was definitely the character I thought about the most. His insecurities were honestly one of the hardest things to read about. He has people who genuinely love him, but he just can't see himself the way they see him. And then there's Willem. Their relationship was easily one of my favourite parts. Willem doesn't magically fix Jude or make everything better, he just stays, and I think that's what made their bond so special.

I also liked JB and Malcolm because they had their own ambitions, insecurities and problems. Their friendship wasn't perfect, and that's what made it feel real. Andy, Harold and Julia also became such important parts of Jude's life, and Harold's love for Jude absolutely broke me.

This book was emotionally draining. I cried so much for these characters, especially Jude, Willem and Harold. There were so many moments where I just wanted Jude to finally say everything out loud and let the people who loved him understand what he was going through.

The chapter lengths were another struggle for me, some felt ENDLESS. The chapters were long LONG. Combined with how heavy the story was, I needed a lot of breaks, which is probably why it took me so long to finish.

This book made me feel sad, angry, frustrated, helpless and so incredibly attached to these characters. Jude and Willem are going to stay with me for a very, very long time.

Two months ago, I opened the doors to my little corner of the library… and somehow, you all wandered in. 📚🌙

In these two months, I’ve learned that the post I obsess over might flop, while a random little thought can find its people.

I don’t need to read every hyped book or follow every trend to belong here. There are enough books in my little library to keep me busy.

And books are only half the fun, I want to know what you think, what you loved, what you hated and which fictional man has once again become a problem. ☕️📖
