Open Call: Funded artist-in-residence at ARE in collaboration with Black Brick

We’re inviting artists working at the intersection of digital culture, new media and performance to apply for a two-month funded residency. We’re looking for someone curious and experimental, who is open to collaboration, exchange and engaging with Enschede’s local cultural scene.

I was invited to spend 3 months in Enschede, a city located in the Overijssel region of the Netherlands. I had just moved out of what I had called home for the past 3 years, a small town in Northern Italy, and quit a full-time job. The project I was going to begin was highly inspiring, bringing together my passions: art, textiles, and what I have always found deeply motivating — jumping into something completely new without expectations.
I was asked to question how garments can become a protection or second skin. The goal was to understand whether textiles and clothes today can carry hidden forms of communication, given the constant exposure we are subject to — both online and offline.

The idea of HIDE as a safe space immediately took shape in my mind as a form of liberation and self-expression, rather than defense or isolation. I imagined HIDE as a materialisation of our identity through objects that belong to us. A skin in which we feel safe because it carries our most comforting memories, and a safe space because, through its tactile properties, we can connect with our inner self. This second skin needed to establish an emotional connection with the user through personal experiences and memory.

Memory and emotion are extremely important to me as drivers for connection with physical matter. My experience with upcycling and altering garments originated in 2020, while I was studying fashion design in Milan and found myself spending a lot of time at home because of the pandemic. Being in close contact with a pile of textiles and clothes I had hoarded over the past 3 years was a wake-up call — moreover, I was going to move out soon and needed to detach myself from most of those items. Even keeping a small piece of fabric from each item was meaningful to me, as it allowed me to re-establish a connection with a tactile memory of a past time or place after I moved.

I took HIDE as an opportunity to understand how others engage with their own material collections and memories, and how I could embed these hidden meanings into a wearable artefact.

What do the things we keep say about who we are? 💭

In HIDE, artist and designer Adele Zavagno explores how the objects and materials we keep, make and collect can carry memories and reveal something about our identity.

For the project, Zavagno worked closely with four participants from Enschede’s creative community. Personal materials and objects, some considered too precious to throw away, were cut, sewn, felted, taken apart and reassembled into wearable art.

The result is a wearable Wunderkammer: a collection of material memories brought together in a new form. Like a second skin, HIDE becomes an expression of identity, made up of textures, colours, shapes and objects that tell our stories without words.

Join us for the opening of HIDE on Sunday 4 October at Black Brick in Enschede.

Exciting news! Together with @gogbot, we’re welcoming a new Artist in Residence to ARE Holland. This time for a slightly shorter stay than usual. During the GOGBOT weekend, Rayan Naftchi (@rayannaftchi) will be joining us at ARE.

Rayan Naftchi is an artist exploring identity, otherness and the possibilities of self-creation through video, installation and sound. Drawing from their experience as a trans person of colour, Naftchi uses digital technologies to distort and deconstruct the body. Their practice reclaims the Alien as a figure of joy, freedom and resistance, inviting us to question who gets to define what it means to be human.

Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye to our artist in residence, Claudio Pestana ❤️

Last week, we celebrated the opening of Claudio’s exhibition Wrap Me Kindly in a Noaberschap Cloth. And what a wonderful evening it was! Alongside the works on display, performance played a central role in the evening, bringing to life the myths, stories and ideas that inspire Claudio’s artistic practice.

Portuguese British interdisciplinary artist Claudio Pestana joined ARE Enschede at the end of June to further develop Mundus Transfiguratus, an ongoing project inspired by ecology, mythology and queer phenomenology. During the residency, Claudio explored Enschede’s textile heritage and sustainable textile innovation, working with recycled textiles and other materials to create an immersive installation that invited visitors to become part of the experience.

A big thank you to Claudio for sharing their practice, stories and imagination with us over the past two months. And thank you to everyone who visited the exhibition and opening, collaborated with Claudio, or showed them a little piece of Enschede and Twente.

What can the things you wear, keep, make or collect reveal about you?

Artist Residencies Enschede (ARE) invites you to take part in Hide, a participatory research project by Adele Zavagno, developed during her residency at ARE in collaboration with Overlap.

Bring materials that feel connected to you. Clothes, textiles, notes, sketches, objects, things you make or collect, or simply something you like. Together with Adele, you’ll explore their stories and meanings. Your materials will then be transformed into a wearable artifact.

Practical info:
- One in person session of around 2 hours at ARE
- Between the end of August and mid September
- The artifacts will be presented during FÆES-›!T in October 2026
- Afterwards, you will receive your artifact
