ERC 2026 Mission Log Rewind 🫆

🌀Navigation — Droning

Score: 15/300

📍Mission Overview

In the Navigation Traverse mission we covered in our last post, the rover makes its way across the terrain. The drone, meanwhile, scouts the area from above, spotting obstacles and terrain features worth exploring. In this drone mission, the drone takes off from and lands on ArUco tags (camera-readable markers) autonomously, and autonomously identifies three probes during flight. It does this three times, and the scores from all three flights are added together.

🌀Navigation Droning —

📍 Mission Report

On our first day of on-site practice run, the drone flew a fully autonomous sequence, from takeoff to landing on the target point, which gave us a promising start. However, hardware issues kept it from flying stably, and we went into mission day still working out some issues.

On the morning of mission day, we had a stable flight under manual control. But during the pre-mission flight check, a system fault prevented autonomous takeoff, and we were unable to attempt the mission in our scheduled slot.

That evening, the ERC organizers kindly gave us a special second chance, and we went back to work on the drone and its systems. At our second pre-flight check, the drone took off autonomously and landed under manual control, clearing us to attempt the fully autonomous mission.

We made three flights in total. On the first, the drone successfully detected one probe, but it drifted too close to the safety net at the edge of the field, so we stepped in with manual control. The recorded coordinates for that probe were also off, so it did not count toward our score. On the second and third flights, the drone took off and flew autonomously, but again came too close to the net while searching for probes and the landing zone, and we had to intervene manually.

Our final score was 15 out of 300, earned for building a landing platform t by @ares_project_official

ERC 2026 Mission Log Rewind 🫆

Earlier this month, ARES Project competed in the finals of ERC 2026, an international robotics competition held in Kraków, Poland, and finished 9th out of 25 qualified teams.

Over the coming days, we'll be sharing the results of each mission !

🌀Navigation — Traverse

Score: 185/300 (5th place)

📍Mission Overview
During Mars exploration, communication delays make it unrealistic to rely on quick remote control from Earth. This mission is designed around that situation, and asks the rover to drive itself. Within 20 minutes, the rover must autonomously visit four designated points and then return to the start. The key criterion is the level of autonomy. The less the operators intervene, the higher the score. Teams that navigate using only the specified sensors, with no video feed and no GNSS at all, earn full marks.

🌀Navigation Traverse —

📍Result

Our rover visited all four designated points within the time limit and placed 5th out of 25 teams, with precise obstacle avoidance and zero tip-overs. This was clearly built on extensive simulation runs using the pre-distributed 3D data of the actual competition terrain.

However, we also ran into a communication dropout. In the rule, each time the rover reaches a designated point, a team member stationed away from the rover must ask for the judges' measurement. At two of the points, the rover did arrive, but its position data never reached us, so we couldn't tell that it had arrived. As a result, we lost the points for those two locations.

The communication method we used on the day had worked flawlessly in practice runs, but we believe the on-site issues, including transmission distance, th by @ares_project_official

ARES Project just set a new competition record at ERC 2026, finishing the Probing Task in 2 minutes and 14 seconds! 🔥
In this mission, five teams compete at the same time to collect 3 out of 15 scattered probes and bring them back to their container—a true test of speed and precision.
All our hard work and practice truly paid off, and we were able to retrieve all 3 target probes in no time! Hope you can feel the intense excitement and sense of accomplishment straight from the field.

Nauka. Technologia. Fermentacja.
