There are seasons in life that change us in ways we never expected.

Sometimes it’s anxiety that seems to come out of nowhere. Sometimes it’s grief, a difficult relationship, a major life transition, or simply waking up one day and realizing you don’t quite feel like yourself anymore.

For more than 30 years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside people through those moments. One thing I’ve learned is that healing doesn’t begin when you have all the answers. It begins when you have a space where you can be honest about where you are.

I created A Restorative Space to be just that—a place where people feel seen, supported, and safe enough to begin healing.

Here, I’ll be sharing reflections from my work as a therapist, conversations about trauma, EMDR, women’s mental health, perimenopause and menopause, and the life transitions that often don’t get talked about enough.

I hope this space reminds you that you don’t have to navigate life’s hardest seasons alone.

Menopause is about more than hot flashes.

Anxiety, mood changes, and not feeling like yourself can also be part of the experience.

As Menopause Awareness Month comes to a close, let’s keep the conversation going about the emotional side of this transition. 💕

There will always be another email to answer, another task on the list, another person who needs something from you.

It’s easy to tell ourselves, I’ll rest when I finish this.

But when one thing becomes the next thing, rest keeps getting pushed further away.

You don’t have to earn rest by finishing everything first.

Sometimes taking a moment to pause is exactly what your mind and body need.

The list will still be there.

Give yourself permission to rest anyway.💕

Self-care doesn’t always mean a quiet day at home, a spa appointment, or checking something off your wellness list.

Sometimes it’s spending time with good friends, sharing a few laughs, and enjoying each other’s company.

Life gets busy, and it’s easy to put those moments on the back burner. But making time for the people who bring us joy is important, too.

A little reminder to make room for friendship, laughter, and connection. That’s self-care, too. 💕

October is ADHD Awareness Month!

Let’s talk about some uncommonly known but commonly experienced ADHD struggles!

When most people think of ADHD, they think of difficulty focusing, being easily distracted, or hyperactivity. But ADHD can show up in ways that aren’t always so obvious.

Emotional dysregulation, rejection sensitivity, and difficulty transitioning between tasks are all challenges that many people with ADHD experience but may not immediately connect to their ADHD.

ADHD is so much more than just difficulty paying attention, and understanding how it shows up in everyday life is an important part of building self-awareness and self-compassion.

✨ Which of these do you relate to most?

There’s a lot of pressure in young adulthood to know what you’re doing.

What career you want.

Who you want to be.

What relationships are right for you.

What your next move should be.

Meanwhile, it can feel like everyone around you has already figured it out.

They haven’t.

This season of life is allowed to include questions, changes, mistakes, and starting over.

You don’t have to have your entire life figured out to be moving forward.

Our minds can be busy places.

We replay conversations. We imagine what could go wrong. We question decisions we’ve already made.

We create entire scenarios that haven’t even happened.

And sometimes, the more attention we give a thought, the louder it becomes.

You don’t have to follow every thought that shows up.

Sometimes you can simply notice it, take a breath, and let it pass without trying to solve it.

A thought can be there without taking over your day.

Sometimes the hardest part of a task is simply starting it.

If you have ADHD, task initiation can be an executive functioning challenge not always a lack of motivation or caring.

A few things that can help:

✨ Define it: Get clear on what you actually need to do.
✨ Shrink it: Make the first step smaller than you think it needs to be.
✨ Set it up: Give your brain something that helps signal it’s time to start open the document, pull out the materials, set a timer, or put what you need right in front of you.

The goal isn’t always to suddenly feel motivated. Sometimes you just need to make starting a little easier.

Save this for the next time your brain is saying, “I know I need to do it…I just can’t start.”

We often think overwhelm has to come from one big event.

But sometimes it’s the small things that add up.

Work. Family responsibilities. A difficult conversation. Not sleeping well. Worrying about someone you love. Another thing added to the to-do list.

Individually, they may feel manageable. But when we don’t have time to recover between them, our bodies can stay in a heightened state of stress.

We keep going because that’s what needs to be done.

But constantly pushing through can leave us feeling anxious, exhausted, irritable, unable to concentrate, or like we can never fully relax.

You don’t have to wait for something major—or until you’ve reached your breaking point—to take care of yourself.

Sometimes that means slowing your breathing. Stepping outside. Grounding yourself in the present. Moving your body. Resting. Talking to someone. Or simply recognizing, I’ve been carrying a lot.

Small things can add up.

So can small moments of care.

Sometimes we don’t realize how much we’ve been carrying until something brings it all back.

Over the past two years, loss seemed to come one thing after another.

I lost one of my dogs. My brother became very ill and later passed away. And in the middle of it all, the Eaton fire disrupted my home and my sense of normalcy.

There wasn’t much time to stop and process any of it. There were things that needed to be handled, decisions that needed to be made, and life kept moving. So I kept moving too.

Recently, I had to return to my home to take care of some things related to the fire. I wasn’t prepared for what came up.

My body reacted before I could make sense of it. I could feel the heaviness, the tension, and emotions connected to more than just that moment.

And I realized—I hadn’t really given myself the space to grieve everything that had happened.

As a therapist, I know the tools. I know how to breathe, ground myself, and pay attention to what my body is telling me. But knowing the tools doesn’t mean we don’t experience grief, trauma, or overwhelm ourselves.

Sometimes we survive first. We process later.

That’s one of the reasons I value EMDR. It can help us process experiences that our minds and bodies may still be holding onto, even when we’ve done our best to keep moving forward.

I’m learning to give myself the same permission I encourage others to give themselves: to slow down, acknowledge what’s there, and make room for grief.

Healing doesn’t mean forgetting. Sometimes it means finally allowing ourselves to feel what we didn’t have the capacity to feel before.

There are days when our minds tell us things that simply aren’t true.

They tell us we’re a burden. That we’re alone. That no one would understand. That things will never get better.

If you’ve ever had those thoughts, I want you to know this: you are not your thoughts, and you are not alone.

As we observe Suicide Prevention Month, let’s remember that emotional pain isn’t always visible. A kind conversation, checking in on someone you care about, or reaching out for support yourself can make a meaningful difference.

If you’ve been struggling, you don’t have to wait until you’re in crisis to ask for help. And if someone you love has been on your mind, consider sending a text, making a call, or simply letting them know you’re thinking of them.

You matter—even on the days your mind tells you otherwise.

— Karen

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger or unable to stay safe, call 911 (or your local emergency services). You can also call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline support. You don’t have to face it alone.

Every person who walks through our doors deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported.

As A Restorative Space continues to grow, I’m grateful to have Bria as part of our practice. We share a commitment to creating a safe, compassionate space where clients can show up as they are and begin the work of healing.

While I primarily work with individuals navigating trauma, anxiety, life transitions, and EMDR therapy, Bria has a passion for supporting teens and young adults as they navigate identity, relationships, anxiety, and the challenges of growing up in today’s world.

I’m happy to have someone on our team who shares the same commitment to helping people feel comfortable enough to be themselves.

We’re looking forward to continuing this work together.💛
