Artists & conservationists, gathering across Africa to explore how art shapes the way we see nature.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
What makes it special? People showing up with curiosity, a sense of humor - and all the little moments together between the panel discussions and the performances - and walking away after three days with 60 new friends from South Africa to Switzerland, Maputo to Madrid. And it simply wouldn't have been possible without everyone behind the scenes, especially the event team (Dija, Safiatou, Marie - absolute rockstars), the hosts and moderators, Chef Fatou and the La Fourchette team who tantalized our taste buds, La Cave Wine Bar and J de Willebois Estate who kept the wine flowing while we listened to the music of SAHAD and Music Beyond, the drivers and set up crews, the staff at all Pullman Hotel and all the venues - and the cameramen (Kehinde, Jigar, Shem) who helped capture it all. by @arete.arts.foundation

Our first book, Afroprophetic: Art transforming minds and nature explores the theme of climate change, Africa’s natural resources, biodiversity and humanity’s relationship with nature.

This post features an excerpt from Romuald Hazoumè’s section in our book which highlights the clichés about Africa and criticizes the hardships of globalization in the African context.

He assembles materials, scraps and obsolete objects, which he uses to represent his vision of society, events or global problems.

Known for his signature “masques bidons” (repurposed masks), Romuald creates a variety of masks using plastic waste and natural materials that are full of character.

“There were travelling artists called “aré”, who were in charge of bringing culture from one kingdom to another. I totally recognize myself in this appellation”.

Romuald considers himself a guardian of his own Yoruba culture, where mask production plays an important role. Attached to the territory, the artist is committed to his fellow Beninese by seeking to raise their consciousness around cultural values.

Other featured artists in our book include John Akomfrah RA, El Anatsui, Dr. Serge Attukwei Clottey, Sokari Douglas Camp CBE, Abdoulaye Konate, Wangechi Mutu, Yinka Shonibare CBE RA, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Barthélémy Toguo.

Arete Arts generates funds from the book and artwork sales, alongside donations, to bring more people into dialogue about the state of the planet and how we can collectively work towards creating a more beautiful and sustainable world. Embracing innovation in thought and action means always trying to see things from another perspective.

We’re proud to announce Tides of Memory by Mário Macilau as a grantee of our Mozambique Creative Initiatives Fund with Spheres of Exchange.

On Mozambique Island, the doors remember. Salt, humidity, and rising seas are wearing them down, and with them, centuries of memory.

In Tides of Memory, photographer Mário Macilau trains young people to document the island’s heritage and coastline, recording oral histories and sharing their work in a public exhibition.

Pancho Guedes designed around 500 buildings in Maputo, and no two are the same.

He gave the city the Lemon Squeezer Church, the Smiling Lion, and Prometheus - modernism with sculpture bolted on. Four of them are close enough to walk between an afternoon.

Save this for your next time in Maputo. #maputo #panchoguedes #africanart #africanmodernism #africanarchitecture by @arete.arts.foundation

Tosin Oshinowo, one of our Dakar 2025 speakers, took Lagos’s self-organising markets to the Venice Biennale and argued they are a model, not a mess.

She argues the case that African cities should stop importing plans drawn for other climates and other economies.
“Tradition is not something of the past; it can be a guide toward more sustainable futures.”

Palavras são Palavras @pspmz puts an established poet and a young person from the neighbourhood on the same stage, with the same chance to be heard.
This cycle, every poem, song and performance takes the environment as its subject — and every evening ends with the audience planting trees.

Keep your eyes peeled for the next soirée

Stills from our Dakar 2025 Film

Kehinde Odutayo spent three days in Dakar and Gorée following the conversations that drifted away from the stage: on stairwells, in courtyards, on the late ferry back from the island.

The full film is linked in our bio.

Gorée Island. Today a museum, and a reminder of how fragile freedom is - it is a landmark of great importance. We were lucky to spend some time on the island in November of 2025, and anyone would tell you that it’s impossible not to feel the power the place holds. by @arete.arts.foundation
