Thrilled to have my author copies in hand for @solarisbooks's anthology, "Nordic Nightmares," edited by Margrét Helgadóttir. This anthology has some heavy-hitter names in the line-up, which I am definitely not, and so this is a real honor!!!

A re-print of mine is in there, "A Pretty Parcel For a Pretty Price," which was first published by @shortwavebooks back in 2024. Forever grateful for that and I love seeing how much Shortwave has grown since then.

I know I should be saying something wild and amazing right now, and dig into my statistics for the decade(+) I've been at this, and for the hurdles that were thrown at me, but there's not really anything else to say but this:

I'M FINALLY GETTING PUBLISHED!

(For my novels, that is 😏)

Super grateful for everybody who pushed me this far and held me up, and those who saw what I wanted to do, and was trying to do, and always will do. ❤️

I teach writing to undergrads as my day job for @southgateschooldk - with a focus on popular fiction and the business side of writing - and I figured I could share a bit of the craft-oriented curriculum that I'm currently teaching for the Science-Fiction and Fantasy semester. 👀👩‍🎓

It's partly inspired by John Truby's The Anatomy of Genre, and I get to talk about my absolutely FAVORITE series in the world: The Green Bone Saga & The Locked Tomb!!!

The upcoming spring semester is Romance, which I'm incredibly excited to dig into! ❤️‍🔥🌹

My debut gothic horror, PORTRAIT OF TWO WOMEN (Titan Books, 2028), necessitated that I take yet another research trip to the real-life manor and former artist colony up in northern Denmark that inspired my fictional version. ✨️ Thankfully, I live close enough that it was no hardship at all. 👀

These buildings are museums now, kept in their original state (or have been returned to such) from when the famous artist colony was alive and sprawling in the late 1880s, attracting people from all over Scandinavia and Europe. 🎨

Maybe I'll dig more into this in the future, but enjoy these pics and story clues for now! ✨️✨️

I do so love me an L.J. Thomas book (which is probably why I joined the street team and now get to scream about this book)!!! 🔥😈

I’ve read a good handful of stories from Thomas by now, and this is probably my favorite (and not only because it’s set in my home-away-from-home, MN & Gunflint!)

It’s got all the big feels backdropped by an immersive atmosphere, a believable local setting and a secretive cast of characters. Thomas leans into the traditional elements of a gothic story and mystery: a great and clever use of liminal spaces, delightfully complicated family dynamics, the slow build of dread and suspense, and big questions about loyalty and faith in every sense of the word.

As usual, the tight prose and the characters draw you in from the start and remain some of my favorite things about Thomas’s writing.

The plot centers on a murder mystery that turns almost existentialist and Lovecraftian towards the end.

The sibling dual POV works well and the voices of the two down-on-their-luck sisters are distinctly different, though I’d expect nothing else at this point.The exploration of sisterhood and siblinghood is likewise something that Thomas did equally well in The Bloody Key, a Bluebeard retelling, and we have some of the same well-written dynamic at play here.

Photo dump from a trip last last weekend that (among other places) took me to the city where I've set my witchy historical novel that I hope to soon sell! ✨️

Ribe is Denmark's oldest town, reaching back to 710 AD as a Viking hub of trade, now "updated" with cobbled streets and an old cathedral. It also has a RICH history of witches, and an incredible museum about just that, called HEX. We didn't go there this time, but I've been to that museum several times before and adore it. It's got great resources and sourcing as well, which I used for my witchy historical novel.

I also went to Christiansfeld that same day, which is a UNESCO heritage site and considered Europe's best preserved Moravian church settlement (still active). They're famous for their "honningkager" (gingerbread) and their ceramic/tiled stoves reaching back 9 generations.

I often forget how old Denmark is and how much history we have crammed into such a tiny space; it doesn't take much to go out and find it, waiting for you. I certainly always find inspiration in local history and love how these field trips give me new ideas every time. ✨️✨️

I figure enough time has passed that I can now share my own quote from The Bookseller article earlier this month for those who couldn't see it or get access to it back then. ✨️✨️✨️

I can't fully believe this is the book that made it, honestly, considering how TiredTM (of publishing, of writing, of endlessly trying) I was while writing it, but the only way to fail is to stop. And I'm NOT stopping (just pivoting every so often to stay in shape and stay energized). 🔥
