Happy Halloween! 🦇🌟

This 1933 edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Mystery and Imagination is filled with the magical and haunting illustrations (in b&w and color!) of Irish artist Harry Clarke (1889-1931). A leading figure of the Irish Arts and Crafts movement, Clarke visualizes some of Poe’s most iconic horror and mystery stories in his Art Nouveau- and Art Deco-influenced style. A macabre dreamworld fit for this austerely bound collection… available now on our website! by @argosybookstore

The Decisive Moment. Henri Cartier-Bresson, 1952. A landmark of photographic history, with 126 black-and-white heliogravure plates and the iconic Matisse-designed cover. This copy bears a penciled gift inscription to illustrator Hilary Knight. A good example of this important and notoriously delicate book.

On every James Joyce fan's favorite literary holiday, we present these two copies of Ulysses currently available in the store. Both copies are First Authorized American Edition, published here in NY by Random House in 1934.

The first copy has been handsomely rebound in full beige morocco with red leather spine labels. The last photo shows a copy with the first issue dust wrapper, with "Reichl" on the front cover. This copy also includes the very rare folio sheet, folded to pamphlet form entitled "How to Enjoy James Joyce's Ulysses", presented with the compliments of Random House to the original buyers of the book.

"The Problem of Greater New York and Its Solution" by Harry Chase Brearley, published in 1914. The book explores the major challenges that emerged in New York City following its consolidation in 1898. It offers an in-depth analysis of critical urban issues, including transportation, housing, sanitation, and education. The need for modernization of the terminal and port facilities is emphasized. The author not only identifies the problems resulting from rapid urban growth and unification but also proposes practical solutions aimed at improving city infrastructure and the quality of life for its residents. Features three reference maps: 'The United States', 'Greater New York and its Harbor', and 'Peninsula of Brooklyn and its two Waterfronts.'

Women bring all Voters into the world
Let Women Vote

By James Montgomery Flagg
Reproduction

This iconic suffrage poster, showing a mother cradling her baby, was first published on the cover of the magazine The Woman Citizen on October 27, 1917. The simple pen and ink sketch above a boldly lettered slogan was highly effective in conveying its message. Similar to the young women in Flagg’s popular Uncle Sam posters of the same era, she is pretty, wholesome and implicitly patriotic. Flagg reminds us that not only do all male voters originate from women, but also that these children will very likely become the soldiers sent overseas to protect American interests. By playing on our most intimate concerns, Flagg created one of the most convincing arguments for women’s suffrage.

James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) was a New York based artist and illustrator, who contributed widely to periodicals at the time, but is best known for his propaganda posters featuring Uncle Sam. #vote #argosybookstore *In store purchase only💥 by @argosybookstore
