I may or may not have gotten emotional multiple times making this reel🥺😂 I just love my people…

I always find myself becoming reflective towards the end of June as I look at another year of life. If you had told me 4 or 6 years ago that I’d still be here, I would’ve never believed you, but somewhere along the way, this became home, and it’s really because these people became my people. If you’re into houseplants at all, you know a pothos is one of the easiest and most beloved beginner plants. But the last time I went to see my family on the mainland, our house’s beloved pothos Zoe went forgotten about for just a little too long…

Since January, here are some things taking care of Zoe the Pothos has taught me, as I do my own healing and returning to what really being myself:

1. Sometimes you just need a good pruning

You gotta prune your pothos, and sis, you gotta prune your life a little sometimes too. This can be the wrong people who have too much access to you, the wrong kind of energy, even the influence of bad theology or fake friends. You probably know whatever it is for you, and it’ll hurt, but friend, you gotta let yourself cut it out and let it go.

When you cut out the things that need to go, you AND your plant have the energy to focus on growth!

2. Repot

Just because you fit somewhere or are in the right spot for a season, you eventually will grow. That’s a good thing! Change is uncomfortable, but if you stay, you’ll stunt your own growth, and you’ll start feeling a little root bound, just like Zoe the Pothos here was. Realizing I have been in places that are no longer right for me recently has been so uncomfortable, but nothing will change unless I let myself be “repotted” into something that fits who I’m growing into

3. The Right Light

As someone who struggles with mental health, THIS is a big one for me. When I realized my pothos was losing the contrast of the variation (the white parts of her leaves in comparison to the green parts), I knew there was one thing she needed more of: light. In a similar way, when I begin to loose myself to all the racing thoughts in my mind, there’s one thing I know I need as well. I gotta get out of my room and MOVE! Happy hormones + movement and discipline = a better mind

4. Give it time!

Do you ever remember your mama, or your aunty (or whoever it was) telling you that “patience is a virtue”? I hate to break it to you, but mama was right. I never expected my Hawaiian chili pepper plants to get this big when I first got them as baby plants, and they’re just starting to flower… While I’m not tall by any means, the fact that they’re as big as my torso it’s getting me🤣

Apparently where I live in Kona just has perfect living conditions for these. 🤷🏼‍♀️
