(Israel - 2019)
The Striped Hyena pauses briefly to my camera trap while roaming its natural habitat on the outskirts of the Modi’in city in the Central District of Israel. My goal was to capture the co-existence of the Striped Hyena and the city in the backdrop using a camera trap (@camtraptions) I had set up one month before I was rewarded with this urban hyena picture. In 2018, I encountered Israel’s most famous predator, a Striped Hyena locally known as ‘Ruthy’, she became famous due to her presence in the urban environment and was a symbol of co-existence between human beings and wild animals. Tragically struck and killed on the Highway by a vehicle near the city of Modi‘in, at age six, after raising cubs possibly more than twice.

The Striped Hyena is a near-threatened species with a global population estimated to be under 10,000 mature individuals. Hunting, poisoning, habitat loss, and road accidents are the major factors contributing to their decline and pushing them closer towards becoming a threatened species. taken in Israel by @arieljfields

It took me two years to capture a photo of a Striped Hyena in an urban area crossing a road. I was in the right place at the right time to capture this individual (not Ruthy) as it used the road as a crossing junction. Field and intelligence work assisted me to know where to wait and position myself for the Striped Hyena. The local wildlife also uses the road as a crossing junction, the road is physically built on a wildlife path of which is now divided because the presence of the road. Wildlife crossings are structural passages beneath or above roadways that are designed to enable safe wildlife movement across roadways. Safe wildlife crossings must be established to prevent the next death.

I was saddened to receive the tragic news that Ruthy, the well-known and most famous Striped Hyena (and predator) in Israel was struck and killed by a vehicle on Highway 443 in the central district of Israel this weekend (July 16th, 2022), at age six. When I first started photographing Ruthy back in 2018, little did I know she’d become a public figure and symbol of co-existence between wildlife and urbanisation. Every night, she entered the city to forage for scarps in rubbish bins. Not everyone was keen on her nightly habits. Twice she was captured by the authorities and relocated, in both attempts she made her way back to the city. At one point, the Israeli court ruled that Ruthy should be trapped. Ruthy’s intelligence overran the authorities ambushes and traps, they never succeeded in capturing her, she became very skittish after being relocated twice before, the authorities eventually abandoned the mission. Ruthy raised cubs at least twice, and possibly more. It was a massive honour to receive in 2019 the ‘Highly Commended’ award in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year international competition for my photo ‘The Charm of Ruthy’. In addition to that I received an ‘Honourable mention’ at the 2021 Siena International Photo Awards competition in Italy for the ‘Evening Stretch’ photo of Ruthy. I had an intimate acquaintance with Ruthy, her death is tragic, here are a few photos of Ruthy to celebrate her life.

Delighted to announce that my image 'Evening Stretch' has been awarded an Honourable Mention in this year's prestigious SIPA competition, in the Under 20 category. Very honoured to have my image selected amongst thousands of entries from 163 countries. Congratulations to all the winners and awarded photographer's, including @roiegalitz and @siberianart

This image features Ruthy, a well-known female striped hyena living in the Central District of Israel. This was back in 2018 when I devoted the majority of my efforts in documenting and studying this individual's life. The striped hyena is an endangered species as the global population is estimated to be less than 10,000 wild specimens. by @arieljfields
