I’ve been typing and retyping various captions to encapsulate what music directing Avenue Q @metrotheatre meant to me. Everything about this process, from day 1 of rehearsals to closing night, felt like a flow state. There was the perfect amount of both ease and challenge, comfort and discovery.

I’m grateful that we have only closed For Now and we get to do this again next summer. Grateful for my sick band for jamming with me every night, for the 7 incredible actors who made me laugh every day, for @chriskingcreative for his vision, directing expertise, and collaboration, and for our crew that made the whole thing work and work REALLY WELL. 💛 by @arielleballance

Music of the Night: The [FAREWELL] Concert Tour.

By a twist of cosmic fate I was brought into this company as an emergency keyboard replacement in April of 2022. Like… “we’re going on a tour the day after tomorrow, can you come in?” Something told me to drop everything and take this crazy last-minute gig. Oh sweet Ari. She had NO idea how much of an impact this show and these wonderful people would have on her life.

Since then, I have travelled coast to coast across Canada, performing the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber with the most talented, kind-hearted, generous, hilarious, GAH!!-inducing people I’ve met. I felt immediately at home with them and they have since become some of my closest friends.

This show and everyone involved taught me as a performer, as well as a person, to be more free, to open up my ears and heart, to listen, to trust my gut, to explore and to play and to try new things to be excited about every day.

It’s a really good idea to go on a 7-week long tour with people whom you love, respect, admire, and can squeeze as much time as humanly (or inhumanly) possible out of and still want more.

Since our first stop which feels like approx. 18 years ago, we: graced my hometown twice (of course making the required pilgrimage to @jacksburgershack), had many a hotel room party, perfected our line dancing, birthed some gourdgeous gourds, spotted wildlife, slung discs, and celebrated our amazing show with a bang💥 oh, and of course played 28 beautiful shows in 26 cities.

It was so so special and I am once again left astonished and grateful to be along for the ride that took us all the way to Winnipeg and back. 50,000/10, no notes!

A WHOLE NEW WORLD has come to an end for moi and unlike some coffees we had on tour, it was life-changing.
The people you see here are not only insanely talented powerhouses, they are also the kindest, most caring, loving, hilarious, and fun people I’ve ever met. It’s pretty rare to have such a cohesive group on a show, but @soundthealarmmt nails it every time.
The tour continues and while my leg of the tour is done (that’s really sad...) I can’t wait to partake in beefbacks, complete crosswords, and clap hands with them again 💞✨ by @arielleballance

So thrilled to have @arielleballance back with us on this new project!
Arielle Ballance is a pianist, music director, choral conductor, writer, and arranger. Originally
from St. Albert, AB, Arielle has called Vancouver home for the last 10 years. She has made
music with numerous theatre companies in BC and Alberta including Theatre Under the Stars
(We Will Rock You, Newsies, 42nd Street), Raincity Theatre (Company), Gateway (Joseph),
Carousel (The 3 Little Pigs, Elephant & Piggie’s “We Are in a Play!”, Charlie Brown), the Metro
(Cinderella), Capilano University (Anne of Green Gables), Studio 58 (A Chorus Line), and
MacEwan University (Curtains). Arielle has been honoured to receive two Ovation awards for
Outstanding Music Direction and was nominated for a Jessie award in 2019. She is also the
asst. artistic director, music director and conductor of Burstin’ With Broadway, a 150-member
non-auditioned choir specializing in showtunes! Arielle is so excited to be back collaborating
with the wonderful artists at Sound the Alarm Music/Theatre after multiple tours of Music of the
Night: The Concert Tour. She is especially excited to play the songs from that mermaid movie.
