May ‘26 Mediterranean Cruise: The Food Edition. Featuring churros and chocolate, an Andalusian rice dish that is v different from paella, pan con tomate and Menorcan sausage, tapas, Sardinian potato-and-mint-filled pasta in a truffle sauce (maybe the best bite of the trip) Genovese focaccia and pesto, mini market French cheese that is better than most other cheeses, olives, raisins on the vine, salmorejo and more! by @arielleinpt

My Best Person @rachelkatiegold is getting married and I loved every minute of Rachel’s Bachelorette Oui-Kend in Montreal! I highly recommend getting a Best Person who has superb taste in friends, foods, and activities among many other things! Highlights: Friend Time, dancing on elevated surfaces to the stylings of a DJ who went from playing Frank Sinatra singing New York, New York immediately into Mr. Brightside, the best Jewish Montréal food tour which featured a Life Changing knish, un-pictured spa time, lots of great food and walkabouts, and a beautiful cathedj by @arielleinpt

Had a delightful mother-daughter day on Saturday back in Santarém, starting with a stroll through the park that used to be the castle and then (the main event) a festival featuring the wines of the Tejo region in the gorgeous Convento de São Francisco. by @arielleinpt

In Santarém last week, @medievalistabouttown introduced me to some stunning gothic churches, and we only went to a fraction of the ones that are actually there! My clear favorite was the Convento do São Francisco, I love a cloister and the massive gorgeous church was unlike anything I’ve ever seen, especially with the privilege of getting to be the literal only visitors present. And there were tons of swallows who nest in the ceilings of the cloister swooping in and out and tending to their cheeping babies! Not a lot of visitors to Portugal visit Santarém and that is a shame, there’s so much to experience! by @arielleinpt

Last week, @medievalistabouttown and I had a ~24 hour mini-vacation adventure in Santarém, a charming city with a ton of history about 45 minutes up the Tejo River via train from Lisbon The castle along the Tejo has been turned into a lovely park that also has Phoenician-era ruins just hanging out. There is also a memorial to Salgueiro Maia who played an integral role in the events of the 25th of April Carnation Revolution that put the nail in the coffin of the dictatorship and used Santarém as a launching point on that day. And holy hell the gorgeous churches. One more whole post to come with them. by @arielleinpt

To mark the 25th of April, we ended the day at Largo do Carmo where the Revolution came to a head and the dictator surrendered. In Carmo Convent, we sat and listened to radio broadcasts from the day of and days after April 25, 1974. And we stopped by the secret police HQ where four people were killed as people tried to free the political prisoners held inside. 25 de abril sempre, fascismo nunca mais. 25 de Abril sempre, fascismo nunca mais. It’s been 52 years since the overthrow of the fascist dictatorship of Portugal and an end to Portuguese colonization of Angola, Mozambique, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe. It is sometimes wrongly called a bloodless revolution, but 4 Portuguese people died the day of and an estimated 100,000+ African people died in the 13 year wars for independence that largely made the revolution possible. It was a good day to be in the streets with friends and fam and friends who are fam and thousands of people protesting fascism. 52 years wasn’t that long ago. A luta continuar (the struggle continues). by @arielleinpt

Believe it or not, only @medievalistabouttown had been inside Pena before because the lines are always so long and it is always so crowded, so it was really fun being able to see the inside, particularly the gorgeous cloister! But wow it must be a nightmare when it’s packed with people, such a privilege to live here and be able to also see it with so few other people! by @arielleinpt
