Went to a salon for the first time in 7+ years for a haircut. It gave me no small amount of pleasure that my stylist spent the entire cut telling me what a great job I do coloring my hair. She could not stop gushing, and called her coworkers over to look because she couldn’t believe I do it myself. When you consider that it’s the culmination of 20+ years of trial and error it’s not that impressive! But I am proud of it and it was a nice ego boost 😂😊 especially since my color is faded so you can see every mistake. She also gave me props for my at home cut I came in to fix- the shape was all there and I had cut the dead ends but I needed someone to even it out and texturize the layers. But at the end of the cut she stops me and goes “listen im picky and I always tell the truth! And you’re very good.” 💁‍♀️ by @arielpellman

It was a night out they were going to remember for a very long time… by @arielpellman

Sometimes I get the chance to get these little behind the scenes shots of the wedding party waiting to walk down the aisle. This one has to be my favorite. Ariel waiting walk down the aisle to marry Christopher by @arielpellman

Ariel and Christopher ended their wedding with a lightsaber tunnel. That was a first for me. An interesting challenge from a lighting perspective. No flash, hi ISO, slightly underexposed, pulling out details in post. Love how they came out. This was on my bucket list and I didn't even know it. by @arielpellman

💖💖💖 So this is love 💖💖💖

I’m still stunned speechless over what just happened. Not just on the 5th - when they say your wedding should be the best night of your life I think it rarely turns out that way. This was. but the whole season of this wedding has been a season of love. Deep friendships, deep family bonds. Strangers being kind and empathetic going out of their way, longtime friends literally and figuratively holding us up on all sides to get us to this moment. And such a moment it was. by @arielpellman

First look for Christopher and Ariel from their wedding this past Sunday. At the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. His reaction was so sweet. And appropriate for such a gorgeous bride. by @arielpellman

The ceremony was supposed to take place in front of this weeping willow at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Approaching storms pushed it indoors. I brought Ariel and Christopher here before the ceremony because I knew they'd want a record of the spot — and that's when I noticed the light filtering through the branches and it came to me in a flash, let's shoot from underneath, using the sun as a backlight. That bright idea, if you'll pardon the pun, produced some of my favorite images from the day. Oh, and Ariel made her dress herself from an original 1890s pattern, and boy did this lighting show it off. It reminds me of an impressionist painting from that period. #StevenRosenPhotography #NYCWeddingPhotographer #BrooklynBotanicGarden #NYCWedding by @arielpellman

Pink hair. White azaleas. And knowing that the way those branches arched over that bench was too good not to use. Ariel and Christopher's engagement session at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. 🌸 #StevenRosenPhotography #BrooklynBotanicGarden #NYCEngagement by @arielpellman

Bluebells at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden only last about a week. Ariel @arielpellman and Christopher's @mryustin engagement session happened to fall right in the middle of that window — and between her pink hair, his blue shirt, and that sea of purple-blue stretching in every direction, the photos practically composed themselves. Almost. Those Bluebells are around for another week or so if you want to book your own session. 😊 #StevenRosenPhotography #EngagementPhotography #BrooklynBotanicGarden #NYCEngagement #Bluebells #NYCWeddingPhotographer by @arielpellman

Is it legal to be this fuckin adorable?

Everyone knows I’m a @betseyjohnson babe. She’s been inspiring me as an artist and designer since my friend introduced me to her work at age 12. Betsey has loomed large in my life and in my understanding of myself. I’d go to the boutiques and dream of having Big Girl Money for beautiful clothes and glittering bags and shoes. When I discovered the outlet stores, they became a pilgrimage site (what trip to Disney world was complete without a stop at the Tanger Outlet in Orlando?) I could have my very own Betsey! I began collecting about 20 years ago. Then the worst thing in the world happened. Betsey’s investors betrayed her and it was the end of an era. I remember going to the boutiques in the end-days, feeling both euphoric at the sales and devastated at the realization I might have to find something else to wear for the rest of my life! Feeling angry for this artist, whose collaborators wanted to dilute her brilliance in pursuit of a buck. Betsey knew what she was about, and she wasn’t going to compromise and I had such respect for it. But I went to every store, talking with the sales associates who had become friends, all of them going through this impending loss. We were grieving and shopping! It was bizarre and frantic. For a year and a half I watched sample sales pop up all over the city and I’d go, collecting whatever I could. 15 years later they are still the staples of my wardrobe. I really did shop for the clothes I’d wear for the rest of my life.

So going to the pop up store today was a real treat. To be back in soho with Betsey Johnson. My absolute favorite thing was to see this gallery of her work in a way I’ve never seen. Not the polished illustrations that were always on display in her boutiques, but the paintings themselves- wild brushstrokes of neon tempera on foam core with the price tags still on and torn sketchbook pages with perforated edges. Betsey has an eye for composition to rival Cezanne and a skill for color to rival Kandinsky. It was such a pleasure to see originals up close and in person.

I even found a treasure to complement my wedding dress; a little Betsey magic for the big day. It’s like it was waiting just for me. by @arielpellman
