"Dedicated to making movies with your friends."⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Hard to say it better than that. In 2020, some of my favorite people got together to create another film - amidst every possible pandemic constraint - and I couldn't be prouder for its Sundance premiere. Although we didn't get to travel to an in-person festival, I'm overjoyed by the response SOMETHING IN THE DIRT has been met with (and how could the fest have had a better backdrop than @davidlawsonjr made?). ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ My beloved art team delivered more than ever (which shouldn't even be humanly possible at this point). Art Director @kati_msimon worked night and day to create piles of one-of-a-kind, twisted and beautiful props, steeped in sacred geometry and an unfathomable attention to detail and world-building. Graphic Designer @kimberensdesign crafted an absolute mountain of documents, hundreds of graphic props and on-screen assets that expanded the film beyond what we'd ever be capable of without her. And my extraordinarily-resourceful sister @trainer_miranda_fitness continues to shine as a priceless art department hero hunting down almost all of the set-dressing, aging props like a pro, and wearing down wardrobe to subtle perfection. I’ll never be able to thank any of you enough for always working yourselves to the bone (and working to create so many, um, props-made-out-of-bones...) to bring indelible art to life. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I also had the immense honor to second unit direct for a few days, with the fantastic skills of brilliant second unit DP @egzcinema, and wonderfully deft art hands and eyes of @kristensemedo joining the team. On top of all that, I also had the joy of some second unit producing and camera operating out in the desert, and even a tiny cameo. :) ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ As the headline says, life really does have more meaning creating with people that you love. Thank you for another adventure @justinhbenson, @aaronmoorhead, @davidlawsonjr - everyone on this team, from the bottom of my heart, across every decade and every dimension, every reality, every impossible color.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I love all of these people more than words can say. I'll never know how I got so lucky to live this dream, but I hope I never wake up from it. by @arielvida
The most recent film I designed is premiering at Sundance 2022. Many, many more thanks to come, but for now… cannot wait to experience this alongside some of my dearest friends - a dream crew. by @arielvida
Words don’t exist that do justice to Halyna. But like all of us who were lucky enough to have her in our lives, I just want the world to remember her light. ⁣ ⁣ I love you so much @halynahutchins. As immeasurably kind as she was talented. She never let a long night on set pass without countless encouraging hugs. Never ended a day without the warmest words of love and optimism. Overflowing with life and positivity and passion. An incredible mother and deeply beloved friend. ⁣ ⁣ What a treasure to know, love, and make art with such an inspiring, magnetic soul. She was profoundly thoughtful and genuine - even while achieving her dreams and making the most incredible strides in her career, she was always looking to catch up, always brimming with infinite support for her loved ones. ⁣ ⁣ There were so many brilliant works of art she had left to create, and more importantly, so many more lives to make brighter just by having her in them. The world is a better place for having ever had her in it, and a dimmer place for her being taken far, far too soon. by @arielvida
SHADOW KINGDOM - The Early Songs of Bob Dylan⁣ ⁣ Impossible to describe the honor of designing this @bobdylan musical performance alongside @bibalionsette. This was one to remember for a lifetime. Directed by the incomparable genius @alma.harel. Held together with art direction by @kati_msimon, set decoration by @trainer_miranda_fitness, every hero save by @rachelhaiin and @cass_lavox, as well as our fantastic construction and set dresser teams. Nothing short of an immense joy and privilege to finally co-design with Hannah, the woman I owe just about everything in my career to, and am forever inspired by her vision and her heart. Everyone on the crew put every bit of their soul into this… breathtaking talent abound. Thank you again everyone, here’s to finding even more magic in the shadows. by @arielvida
A little over eight years ago, watching The Tonight Show with my family, I saw Lord Huron for the very first time. Last night, a live performance aired that I had the immense honor to direct. “I Lied”, featuring the incredible @augustponthier, is one of the most moving, hauntingly beautiful songs they’ve written and beyond humbling to witness performed by this team.⁣ ⁣ The boys’ new album ‘Long Lost’ is out now and is gorgeous in every possible way - there isn’t a kinder or more talented group of people creating worlds like this.⁣ ⁣ Endless thanks to DP @hammerandnails, cam op @anthonyrparisi, art by @rachelhaiin, and an ever-deepening debt of gratitude to @kimberensdesign, @campbellandy, @trainer_miranda_fitness, @kati_msimon, christine.kilmer and @bibalionsette. by @arielvida
“Saturday night’s alright for fighting.” - The RocketMandalorian by @arielvida
Still can’t believe the surreal reality in which I designed this film. Between glowing reviews (NYT Critic’s Pick!) and clips on The Tonight Show (as a kid I’d watch for sneak peeks of movies with my parents!), my heart is bursting at the seams with pride and joy that Synchronic is now out in the world.⁣ ⁣ @justinhbenson, @aaronmoorhead, and @davidlawsonjr trusted me on their biggest movie yet and I’ll never be able to thank them enough. Being flown out to New Orleans to work on a story with so much heart, and the opportunity for a wider array of design than I’d ever had the honor of diving into, is both a life highlight and a can’t-believe-it-wasn’t-a-dream blur of wonderment. The work the art team accomplished should have been impossible in the time and budget we had, and what every crew member pulled off was Herculean. ⁣ ⁣ Art Director @kati_msimon crafted numerous beyond-gorgeous works of art spanning centuries of references. @kimberensdesign designed piles of amazing graphic props to deftly elevate the worldbuilding of the film. Set Decorator @abbster50 brought to life dozens of sets with meticulous, stunning detail, and our little art dept AirBnB was such a joy to call home. Abby’s team killed every long night and cold, rainy morning. And every day would have fallen apart without On-Set Dresser @dunbarmerrill and Prop Master Billy Bamman who both moved mountains (metaphorically) and battled rising waters (literally) in order to make magic happen every single shot. Our scenic and construction team gave us everything we could have dreamed of and then heaps more. Every crew member worked to the bone on this film and it shows on screen. Accomplishing something like this is what I dreamed of growing up. I could keep rambling on and on and still not do justice to what this film means to me. ⁣ ⁣ Thank you to everybody for every single moment of this experience, and to everyone who watches what we made together. by @arielvida
In my very first year in LA, six years ago, I met @bibalionsette on a music video she was designing and could tell that she was incredible in every way, so I asked if she needed an art director on anything in the future. She mentioned a short film, and a couple weeks later we were on The Babysitter Murders together. I’ve never seen anyone work as hard as she did on that set, and with such beautiful vision. What followed were many more unforgettable art dept endeavors together, and I credit everything I know as a designer to Hannah. My heart is a million times more full for having her as a friend, and Babysitter Murders introduced me to a community I treasure deeply.⠀ ⠀ @rspindell and @tjustinross welcomed me into their fantastical, passionate team with open arms, and by the end of 2014 I joined them at Power House Creative Space - an office and community created by @willandaway which set almost all my future collaborations into motion. I’ll never be able to fathom how lucky I was to find these people. Power House was where I met the Rustic Films family. @ericekmaaan and I worked on the edit of World Ender long into the nights there. Power House had to leave that location earlier this year, and it was like leaving a beloved home. ⠀ ⠀ Babysitter Murders was one chapter of what would eventually become The Mortuary Collection, which has just been released to the world on Shudder. Dozens of people that are so dear to my heart worked in every facet of this film, and it’s immensely inspiring to have watched it come to life over the years. I met so many lifelong friends on this team, and learned a ton at a time when I was brand new to the city and just hoping to be a part of something with so much zeal. I’m so, so grateful to and in awe of the multitude of amazing people involved in this winding story... Sentimental feelings abound. by @arielvida
Somehow I was lucky enough to have designed two films that screened at @beyondfest this week - Synchronic, and the world premiere of Archenemy. ⠀ ⠀ The team worked harder than ever on this one. The endlessly-multi-talented art direction of @kati_msimon, always better-than-I-could-dream-of graphic design from @kimberensdesign, and new art family I’m forever indebted to - set decorator @rebeccamariec and leadman @goforjake worked so ridiculously hard to create the world you see in these sets. I’m still gobsmacked at what this team was able to pull off. And @trainer_miranda_fitness and @campbellandy spending a holiday weekend with us turning the most unliveable location into a colorful set people could safely breathe and walk around in! How can I express enough thanks for the feats pulled off for this film? What a nonstop inspiration to work with you all.⠀ ⠀ So grateful to @kimbototron for reaching out to me about the gig, and turning out to be one of the smartest, kindest, hardest working women in the industry that I’m so lucky to now have as a friend. With cinematography by the utterly brilliant @halynahutchins, phenomenal skills in makeup and in all art from @mazenapuksto, and the incredible drive through so many grueling all-nighters at our office of @michelle__laine creating unforgettable, one-of-a-kind costume design.⠀ ⠀ And of course, director @adamegypt666 who brought us together with such a strong, out-of-this-world vision and energy, with a script that weaves heart, action, and style together like a dream. Enduring every possible wrench that could be thrown by the cosmos into the shoot, he brought this story to life with focus, love, and infinite passion.⠀ ⠀ Everyone on this crew gave it their all and then some (special thanks to the grip team for the times they saved me from breaking all my bones trying to get something done fast). The crew pushed through so much, and it was beyond humbling and inspiring to be surrounded by them every day.⠀ ⠀ And finally, the amazingly talented, inventive, and collaborative folks at @spectrevision - Daniel, Lisa, and Elijah. An honor to be part of the team on this one. Thanks to all. by @arielvida
She Dies Tomorrow premiered last night, a film by @amyztemies that I had the immense privilege to production design. I’ve never met anyone like Amy. Unfathomably brilliant, infinitely talented, patient and kind beyond measure. I can’t even begin to express the joy and honor of working on this project. Released by Neon, it’s playing drive-in theatres now (including my hometown Getty Drive-In!) and coming to VOD on 8/7.⁣ ⁣ As always, I wouldn’t make it through a shoot without my co-pilot, Art Director @kati_msimon, and the graphic design of @kimberensdesign. Forever grateful to @davidlawsonjr and the rest of the Rustic Films team @aaronmoorhead and @justinhbenson for bringing me on, and the entire crew including breathtaking cinematography by @jkeitel, @mega8s and @_spam_risk_ keeping the entire shoot afloat, the haunting music of @mondoboys, art department construction by @fantasticmrfox11 and set dressing by @everybodyhatesmondayss and @bland_andy, as well as my extremely understanding sister @trainer_miranda_fitness for driving all night through the desert with me just so I could make the first production meeting. I’ll forever cherish every second I was lucky enough to be part of this magic.⁣ ⁣ ///⁣ ⁣ BTS 📷: @brettintofox by @arielvida
The LA City Budget is due tomorrow 6/1. If you're looking to go beyond optical allyship - which makes a statement but isn't aimed at breaking away from the systems of power that oppress - this is something we can do IMMEDIATELY. ⁣In order to be actively anti-racist, we must take ongoing action to dismantle racist systems.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Mayor Garcetti has proposed a $10.5 billion budget that reduces services, furloughs city workers, and cuts the budget of all city departments with one big exception: the Los Angeles Police Department. We need a budget that values and prioritizes services over police - a people's budget. The People's Budget LA is a coalition created by Black Lives Matter - Los Angeles, and includes community organizations, faith leaders, parents, teachers, and individuals from across LA. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ The Mayor’s budget is scheduled to go into effect by default WITHOUT A VOTE tomorrow unless @cd6nury schedules a special meeting.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ We are requesting that they hold an emergency council meeting tomorrow to deny the mayor's budget that favors policing services over the support of the people.⁣⁣⁣⁣ The community must have a chance to make their case to redistribute the budget. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Time is of the essence, please make the calls and send the emails tonight and first thing tomorrow. Their staff is required to keep track of every one of them. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We NEED #CareNotCops.⁣ ⁣ ///⁣ ⁣ @blmlosangeles / more info at peoplesbudgetla.com by @arielvida
