my mom has this silly habit of reminding me how overwhelming my beauty collection is. most times, she asks me how i manage to use everything, seldomly, she scolds me about how my room looks like a mini department store. but that day, when i asked about what her rituals look like as a teen, she said “i only had mena cream” for the unfamiliar, mena cream is a thai brand that rose to popularity in the nineties for its tagline “beautiful in seven days” — promising brightening, and moisturizing results within a week of use. a pot of this cream are sold for fifteen pesos, making it one of the most accessible southeast asian products in the beauty aisle before. its packaging is also well-recognized: statement eyes, pronounced pink cheeks, and bold red lips—to some, it is a look inspired by shiseido’s former art director and visionary serge lutens—but for us, it served as the perfect inspiration for this shoot. when you are given the prompt to come up with an editorial that embodies what “mother” means today, the possibilities are endless. but for this section, we refer to the face of mena cream: its pop culture appeal, lasting legacy, and significance to filipino beauty routines at the time of this prime. #theartistedit by @arigatomargo
