I woke up yesterday with no idea that I’d end the day staring at my face on the Nasdaq billboard in Times Square. To have this moment in New York City, the place where I was born and raised, feels surreal. ✨🗽I’ll never forget standing on this same corner as a teenager in 2006, when my grandma called me out for skipping class after my aunt spotted me in a sea of millions of people...what we she doing down there anyway?!😭 🤐That lesson stuck with me, and today it reminds me how far I’ve come.Now, as a Founder and CEO, returning to this corner with @femly on display is proof of what’s possible when you honor your roots, carry your community with you, and keep building with impact.Moral: Keep going...and hide from your family. Becoming one of the first 200 Black women in U.S. history to raise more than $1 million in venture capital is something I’ll never take for granted.It’s an honor. It’s history. And it’s also one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.People often celebrate the headline, but they don’t always see the years of pitching, the countless “no’s,” the changing market conditions, the emotional weight of fundraising, or what it takes to keep building after the money is raised.Raising venture capital isn’t a finish line. It’s one milestone in a much longer journey of building a company that creates real impact.If you’re considering venture funding, know your “why.” Venture capital can unlock incredible opportunities, but it’s not the right path for every business, and it comes with expectations, tradeoffs, and a level of resilience that few people talk about openly.I’m incredibly proud to stand alongside the women who are redefining what’s possible across healthcare, consumer products, technology, and beyond. Building a company is never a straight path, and that’s exactly what made this conversation so meaningful.Honored to have joined the Maryland Innovation Center as a speaker and pitch competition judge, sharing lessons from my journey as the founder of Femly while hearing from an incredible group of aspiring entrepreneurs and innovators.We talked about everything from validating ideas and entering new markets to navigating setbacks, building resilience, and turning research into real-world impact. One of my favorite moments was listening to the student founders pitch their startups and offering feedback to help strengthen their vision.Every founder starts with an idea. The longer we build, the more we realize that success isn’t just measured by the companies we create. It’s also measured by the relationships we build along the way.I met @senatmade by chance in Philadelphia. As soon I realized he was the founder of @allpeephq which is apart of the @blackambitionprize along with my company @femly , we knew that this was an opportunity to connect and build!Today we reflected on our journeys as Black Ambition founders, shared what we each took away from the Louis Vuitton Learning Lab in New York and Paris, and had an honest conversation about navigating entrepreneurship in today’s climate.We talked about fundraising, expanding into new ecosystems, the importance of showing up consistently, and how opportunities often arrive long after the introduction is made.Most importantly, we were reminded that the founders growing beside us are more than peers. They’re future collaborators, thought partners, customers, champions, and lifelong friends.Innovation doesn’t happen in isolation. Economic trends aren’t just numbers. They shape the lives of founders, employees, families, and communities.Honored to join the Maryland State Comptroller, the Women in the Economy data team, and an inspiring group of women leaders for a roundtable on the latest Women in the Economy Report and what it means for Maryland’s future.A few insights that stayed with me:• Women hold 64% of all student loan debt.• Women are more likely to participate in retirement savings, yet often take longer to build wealth.• More women are working well into their 70s as rising costs continue to reshape retirement.• Maryland currently ranks 49th out of 50 states for business friendliness, a reminder that we still have work to do to support entrepreneurs and economic growth.As founders, we have a responsibility not only to build businesses, but to understand the economic landscape we’re building within. These conversations help identify gaps, uncover opportunities, and influence the policies and partnerships that strengthen our communities.If your state offers opportunities to participate in discussions like this, raise your hand. But Here We Are.As we celebrate Independence Day, I’m reflecting on what it means to help write the next chapter of American history.I’m honored to be included in The First 200, a first-of-its-kind public archive documenting the first 200 Black women founders in the United States to raise more than $1 million in venture capital.For me, this recognition isn’t about a funding milestone.
